Hi everyone, I am about to start on a new DIY project. I have a friend who is willing to sell me some older active monitors at a price I cannot pass up. I am thinking of taking the amp and amp plate from that and making my own set of active monitors. I am thinking of using 6 1/2" woofers and a silk dome tweeter. I have looked up the amp specs, and it is 4 ohms to the woofer and 6 to the tweeter. Does it matter if I use a 4 ohm tweeter? I know if I use an 8 ohm speaker I won't get the same power output, so I am sticking to the specs as close as possible. I am clueless as to what woofers I should use. Oh, and I should point out, my budget is $200-$250. That is not including the monitors I am getting from my friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might get better answers about speakers here:

Generally though, active speakers are designed so that the crossovers are complimentary to the speaker drivers themselves, meaning that their individual efficiencies and crossover points  are accounted for in the crossover design. Taking the amps out of the existing speakers, and using them with new drivers, would be a real crap shoot trying to get nice balanced sound.

Thanks. I will have to sign up there. And I thought about what you are saying, and I know it could be a crap shoot, but what I am looking at isn't going to cost much. Its pretty much just to get my feet wet.
