I had narrow my choice down to either Musiland 02US or M2Tech HiFace. I going to use it for my ultra portable laptop as my CarPC which currently using X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB with optical out to my DAC(Audison Bitone sound processor). While the X-Fi sound good, I think the Musiland or M2Tech should sound better, I hope. I mostly play 44.1Khz 16Bit MP3/Flac/Wav files. Which one provide the best sound quality?

If you can wait a week, I will have both and tell you.

Otherwise, I think both are excellent based on what I have read. Several say that the Hiface is the better of the two, but I suspect that the differences are within 2% and perhaps up to "taste".

I have the Musiland and I think it's superb. One thing to note, the 02 US is mains powered, M2Tech Hiface gets it's power from the USB port of your laptop. So if you're stuck for an extra socket, the M2Tech might be better for you.

For ultraportableness, the Hiface would be superior, because it doesn't require external power. I'd imagine it's a slightly better USB --> SPDIF converter anyway.

Yes, please compare both and tell us what you think. That would be awesome. Thanks.

sorry for gravedigging, but did you ever get to compare the two, lordsegan?
I found that other thread by googling myself, but the opinion was quite evenly split. Yeah I get the idea Musiland is muddier (or more musical). More opinions would be very much appreciated.

If the down stream equipments are not that demanding, then both of them may perform similarly well. But for the portability, Hiface is much smaller than the Musiland 02 US.

Not sure if I am reading the linky right, but it seems to suggests the output stalls at 48khz even when you set it at 44.1khz due to accuracy or crystal used?

Also, the link has the musiland 01. I should go back and read up what the differences are between the 01 and the 02.

All the models from the current USB "Monitor" serie run the same clock synthesis, they're working on a much tighter design...but it's not available in USB yet:

Digital output is all the same, just use the X-FI.

Did you ever consider stand-up comedy?

Digital output quality varies widely otherwise we all would have stuck with X-Fi's rather than upgraded to better sounding options.  The majority of people who are into audio as a hobby have limited resources and will only upgrade if they can quantify an improvement in sound quality.

Yes, it would be nice if all digital outputs were created equal, unfortunately for us they are not.
