In the Main Forum, someone has stated that because the K702s are single-ended, that re-cabling them doesn't accomplish anything, i.e. compared to rewiring everything in the K701s. True or False?

Yep, sure does. All cans are single ended and can be recabled with a higher quality single ended cable, or re-terminated to a balanced configuration. Here is the link for the 702 recable.

I understand that, but I believe the point the person was making was that because the K702s are single-ended, the other wiring in the K702s also needs to be replaced or put another way, replacing the K702 cable is not the same thing as re-wiring K701s.

Ahh, well heres what Ken said in the AKG 702 page.
"While a direct cup rewire would be optimal, I do not agree with the though of the detachable recable being "pointless" you still get a marked improvement with the detachable recable vs the stock. I have compared the stock vs the ones we are making and its pretty obvious. Its also nice to be able to have a spare cable and the convenience of having the cable its pretty nice. I can make the detachable recable to any length also. I do preform a direct hard wire on the AKG 701s, its a lot more work and costs more dough."
Hope that helps.

My apologies kboe. I misunderstood your comment and obviously didn't look at the link. Thanks for taking the time to post again.

Oh ok. I guess what you were trying to say is that the 702s are single entry, rather than single ended, as in the cable only enters the headphone through one cup, with internal wiring reaching the other driver. That makes sense now. And no need to apologize, the terminology around here is sometimes a bit funky.

As I understand it, there are 2 main differences between the K701 and K702 in terms of cables:
1.
K702 has a 3-pin mini-XLR connection for a detachable cable (single-entry), while the K701 does not. This means that you can replace the stock cable easily with another cable that has a 3-pin mini-XLR connection, assuming it's unbalanced. The K701's cable is not detachable, so doing a unbalanced recable requires opening them up.
2.
K701's cable has 4 wires in it, so you can easily reterminate the TRS connector to balanced XLR. Additionally, the stock cable is conveniently connected to L+, L-, R+, R-, meaning you don't actually need to open them up to recable them to balanced (This is what I hear from these forums, I don't actually own a pair of K701s).
However, the K702 not only has the 3-pin mini-XLR connector, but it also connects L- and R- internally (it's soldered together). This means if you wanted to recable them to balanced, you would have to remove the 3-pin connector, as well as open them up to desolder the common ground (L-, R-). Thus, the K702 cannot be balanced by simply cutting off the TRS and replacing with XLR connectors. (I actually opened them up and confirmed this)
I hope this clears it up for you. I'm thinking about trading my K702s for K701s for reason #2, because balancing the K702s is much harder. Are you thinking about balancing yours too? Or are you looking for a upgraded detachable cable (such as the one from ALO)?

I have an unbalanced amp. (RWA Isabellina), and after reading this and also going on the ALO site, it looks like the best option may be to buy another set of re-cabled K701s. I see on the ALO website that this is quite a bit more expensive (and I am assuming better) than K702s with an ALO cable.
