ER6 questions/observations

Hi Mathew. Welcome to Team Etymotic.

Most of the discussion about getting a good seal has been about the ER4 series. I suspect that Don designed the ER6 to be easier to use for new users of this type of phone. I think that the price is also quite low for what they deliver.

I believe that the ipod plus ER6 will be an ideal combo. I am curently using ER4s with mine, and it works great. I intend to get the ER6 next year.

As for the background noise in the ipod, it is a damned nuisance for me. It cuts right through on a lot of the music that I listen to. The Etys are part of the reason. By lowering the noise floor by >20 db they make the whine quite apparent in quiet passages. Reports from Apple are that they are working on a solution. Other than that it is a splendid source for portable music.

Thanks for the welcome Greg.

Following the advice here, putting a tiny bit of lubricant on the tips and inserting them pushing upwards really helped. It seemed easier to get a seal and they were more confortable--less itching and less pressure (but neither went away completely).

Still waiting for the iPod; I'll share my impressions with the '6s when I finally get it (hopefully by this coming Thursday).

Thanks,
--Mathew

if they sound even remotely similar to the ER4S's, they will utterly wail on the EX70's and the V6's.

I'm interested how the Ety/iPod combo works out. I'm holding back for now. But who knows about tomorrow.

Well, Bob...............tomorrow is now!
I went to visit my son in Manhattan yesterday. I brought along my ER6s to see if there was any audible hiss, noise, or whine through the headphone jack of the iPod. As there is no line-out, I wasn't planning to use an amp. I'm happy to report.....the electronics of the iPod are dead-silent. No hiss or noise whatsoever. But I did hear the infamous whine when a very quiet passage of classical music played. Very strange sound, indeed. As I don't plan to listen to classical on the iPod, this is not a concern. And if I did decide to do so, I'm confident that Apple has a fix somewhere in the pipeline. Anyway, I was so impressed with the sound, I walked over to J & R Music World and picked one up for myself.
I just finished ripping a few CDs that I'm very familiar with. I used iTunes and set a variable bit rate, the lowest being 192. The CDs were of acoustic music (guitar, fiddle, banjo, vocals, both male and female.......John Prine, "In Spite of Ourselves." A little Van Morrison was also thrown in.
The result: Very impressive. Granted, the sound quality was not up to CD standards, but it was pretty damned close. I'd say it was about 95% there. For the amount of music that can be stored on this thing, and the way it looks and feels in your hand, the iPod is one helluva cool toy.
And the ER6s seem to my ears to be a perfect match............................very highly recommended!

Good to hear. My 6's should be here Tuesday. I've also been using 192 VBR and am pleased with sound through Grado SR 60's and Senheisser MX-500's. I'm sure the 6's will be even better. I can't get over how good the SR-60's sounded watching a DVD on my iBook. My daughter took over the Big Screen tonight. Best $70 I every spent.
