Just wondering. In case I want to get one in the future. What is the best amp for an AKG K271 MKII? What features would this amp bring out in the headphones? Thanks!

I love AKG 271 sound with:
1. Corda Swing
Meier Audio
and
2. WBA Samatha
White Bird Amplification

I'm also looking to pick up a set of the K 271s and an amp.

The Headphone Buying Guide recommends looking at non-portable amps. I'm guessing that it's referring to AC powered amps.

Also I read over and over in these threads that it makes no sense to spend 2-3 times the price of the headphones for an amp. For instance, the Gilmore Lite sounds like a great amp, but at 3 times the price of the K 271, does it really make sense?

I'm looking for an amp to sit between an Ipod with LOD and the K 271.

I use Corda Swing
Ipod 5.5G -> LOD RCA -> Swing -> AKG

So here are some contenders, based on reading posts in Head-Fi.

Meier Corda Swing
Thunderbolt Max
Cute Beyond
Headroom Micro Amp
Gilmore Lite

Thoughts? Pros/cons? Experience with the K 271 MK II?

I received my K271s today. I was only able to listen to them for a couple of hours, but, WOW!! And this coming straight from the ipod headphone jack.

An amp related question. They sounded really good with the volume turned up. Not really loud, but higher volume. If I turned the volume down to a low listening level, the SQ or richness fell away. It's kind of like listening to something that moved farther away.

Is an amp going to provide the SQ/richness at lower volumes that I hear at high volumes?

I agree with you. It does sound amazing at higher volumes. This was why I'm looking for an amp for it. I've been listening to a lot of Sarah Brightman and some classical music and it is in these genres that these phones really shine. The mids are amazing and even though many people say that there's no bass, I feel that the bass is perfect for these genres. I have a Grado SR225, TF10s, thinksound rain and an ozma 5 as well for my other genres of music.

These cans are not ¨that¨ easy to drive. Low impedance headphones need less voltage to reach a given volume, but demand a lot of current.
The Heed Canamp and the Shanling P100 can provide really good amplification for a low price.
I have the Canamp/K271 combo, 100% recommended!

Probably removing the Thunderbolt and Headroom.

Adding these two amps to the list:

Heed Canamp
Travagan's Red

Update list of options. I hate options! Ordered by cost, low to high.

Travagan's Red
Cute Beyond
Meier Corda Swing
Heed Canamp
Gilmore Lite

Does anyone know of a place to demo any of these in the Minneapolis area?
