[REVIEW] Sherwood SE-777
Mar 15, 2010 at 8:36 AM Post #16 of 33
can anyone tell me how to take the housing off? specifically that band with the sharp edges... the design is atrocious , its clear that its been designed to look like a set-top amplifier , or a turntable stylus, but this has no place near my earlobes.... if i keep it in my ears any longer im going to suffer an injury...

agree with the sound, its highly respectable and puts my full size cans to shame... i could actually detect the difference between different audio compression encodings, something i could only dream about before i knew about IEM's ...

umm ok i've only just spotted the hex screwheads on the side of the housing... now if only i could get hex drivers that small....
also, do any of you have any disassembly pics of these IEM's? is the square band required to hold the housing together...

I'll take pics later and upload them. The square band does hold the back end and the front end together. Without it, the back plastic/rubber bit may fall out.

Also, I'd like to apologise for the early comments in this thread. I don't like the ergonomics of this earphone, but it sounds good. I wrote that stuff as we were deciding as if my dad needed brain surgery and my own brain was really, really stilted towards anger. The ergonomics just got me off.

im sorry to hear about your dad, feeling angry towards the ergonomics of the SE777 is understandable

this design is totally unacceptable, i feel like im placed at a crossroads of either returning the IEM's or burring the square bracket with a rotary tool... i almost feel regret for buying these IEM's

Yep the stock eartips is really bad as it is simply too short and placed the earpieces too close (pressing) to my ear. I switch to the clone Sony Hybrid eartips and everything goes fine.

i wonder how long it will be before Sherwood brings out an updated version of these IEM's ... or at least an updated bracket which holds the casing together

their inexperience with IEM's really shows with that bracket design, it seems that they are putting more focus on their brand of aesthetic principles than actual ergonomics

at least it's a simple problem to fix... just need to find the right screwdriver and a decent dremel-like tool
im pretty sure that i can make that bracket look and work nicer than Sherwood ever did

I wonder if Sherwood even designed them. I like them, but dear me, their first earphone comes from China - it could be that the factory just sold them a plan and several designs which Sherwood bit at.

if that was the case, then it would be a quality control issue instead... no reason that paying customers should have to be exposed to issues like this

all it needs is a longer set of tips, to hold the casing far away from your ear... im thinking having longer 'stalks' on the Comply foams , but not sure how this would affect isolation... it would probably reduce the treble response tho, longer tubes tend to muffle the sound...

i mean i like these IEM's, their sound reminds me of the open-back fullsize headphones i used to own, before i had to buy closed headphones and IEM's due to living in a noisy place

what types of screwdrivers do i need to dissasemble the casing?

also i have been thinking, since the casing can be dissasembled, wouldnt it be nice if there were alternative front halves with different designs... like a thinner stalk so tips from etymotic, shure, westone, etc etc would work...and maybe the sound signature can be changed as well
so its like a modular IEM

What you need is a hex driver, size T6 to be precise. You will void the warranty if you did open it up, but I am sure you have realized that.

i will open it up as a last resort, in order to file away the sharp edges of the bracket... it is the only problem with the IEM

but if Sherwood can make the front half of the case exchangable, it wouldnt be a bad idea

well, I has vB now, and I want to something with better mid (vocal actually), is Sherwood my answer? or perhaps I have to chose RE 0 instead? (or maybe PL 50?)

and how about the Sheerwood's bass compare to vB and RE 0?

note: I love ultra portable system, so there's no amp to use

Thx.

Yep, SE-777 definitely has better, more forward and texture mid than VB, but not as bright nor as hard hitting on bass. RE0 is more like VB, but with better vocal handling and detail but much less bass. PL-50 is similar sounding to SE-777, but slightly less texture on the mid and less warm on the mid and low. SE-777 is a great vocal IEM but do notice the fit problem, and you might need aftermarket eartips. If you are worry about fit, PL-50 is a lesser yet still excellent sub-$100 choice.

Another good choice will be the upcoming Brainwavz M2. It also has a fairly good mid / vocal performance (slightly less texture than PL-50), but a little brighter than PL-50 and has a very punchy bass. You can get it as ViSang R03 on eBay but I will recommend you to wait for the M2 as it carries better accessories and warranty terms. For overall performance and genre adaptivity, M2/R03 is fairly good, but vocal wise I will still pick SE-777 as it sounds more effortless and natural to me.

thx for the explanation clieos,

I don't think fit will become my problem, I've lot enough eartips aftermarket here (from comply till Sony silicone eartips)

Since you said Sherwood is very warm, I just curious, actually how warm is it? I has PL 11, which is for me, it sound dark and has treble roll off, so which one is warmer (or even darker) between Sherwood and PL 11?

I don't think PL 50 is really a great option for my self, cause I run glasses and over the ear style a bit make me uncomfortable

About the Brainwavz, sound intresting, but I think I will looking for IEM with more natural bass, cause my focus is vocal now, fyi, vB with 2 dot plate is a bit too much for me, and what I remember, bass on RE 0 is too tiny for my taste (have you ever heard Superlux HD318F? I like its quantity of bass, a bit bigger than RE 2)
