I recently bought speakers from Bohlender Graebener with a 4ohm impedance. Unfortunately, I have now realised my amp has a protection circuit that will not allow it to work with speakers with an impednce less than 8ohms. Is there any remedy to this situation short of returning the speakers minus the restocking fees.

Sure -- you could wire 4 ohm resistors in series with the speakers (only need to be on one side, but you need one each on each channel). You could just as well wire four 2-ohm resistors -- one on each connection (that way it's on both the plus and minus side).
