I am getting ready to buy a new digital reciever, but need to know some things, particularily from those of you familiar with the Pioneer SE-DIR1000C Dolby headphone system...

I know that the Pioneer unit supports DD-EX and DTS-ES... So in order to utilize these on my new Pioneer DH system, does my digital AV reciever need to be able to decode these fancier formats to send to the Pioneer unit?

Or can I get a simplier reciever that only supports DD and DTS? Does the Pioneer accept and decode DD-EX and DTS-ES on it's own with a basic DD or DTS code sent from the reciever?

If not, are DD-EX and DTS-ES all that common and worth the extra $$$ for a more upperline reciever in order to decode them...?

Thanks so much for the help....

As long as your receiver passes on the digital input it receives (all receivers I know do this) it doesn't matter whether or not it supports any particular decoding mode -- the Pioneer will decode 6.1 on its own.. Indeed, you can drive the DIR1000C directly from your DVD player, should you choose. 6.1 disks are few and far between, and not at all essential.

Save your money.

The Pioneer is going to interpret the incoming signal, decide whether or not it's #1)a digital "multi-channel" signal (Dolby Digital, DTS, DD-EX & DTS-ES) or #2)a stereo 2-channel signal.

With #1 it decodes the signal and spits it out as "Dolby Headphone" which simulates 5.1 channel system.

With #2 it decodes the signal and spits it out as "Dolby Headphone" simulating Dolby Pro Logic II.

My own personal preference is in situation #1 I like the DH2 setting. In situation #2 I prefer the DH3 setting. If this does not mean anything to you it will after you get the headphones. There are three different settings on the Pioneer, DH1, DH2, & DH3. Each applies a different "effect" too the sound. See the Dolby Headphone homepage at http://www.dolby.com/dolbyheadphone/

hehe, no I was partly joking since u asked what was the best connection

if your amp has a digital out then that should work? you said that you had done this? and that you got sound but you got sound from your speakers as well? then how about turning the volume down or muting the receiver?

I have an older onkyo ds777 receiver myself and it has a toslink output, but I havent gotten my dir1000c yet (early this week I hope *crosses fingers*). So I havent tried this myself.

The other option I see for myself tho, is connecting it to my dvd player with the toslink and connecting the ds777 with coax, since the dvd has both toslink and coax out, and then switching between them on the dvd player instead. Running it via the 777 might be more practical, depends (cable lengths etc) but u are putting more stuff in the singnal path by doing so (not that it should matter much, well, what do I know)

I know I used to put the shvs vdeo signal thru the 777 on the way to my tv so I could use the osd (onscreendisplay) of the 777 on my tv but this made the picture really really dark, so I had problems seeing anything in dark scenes, so I plugged the svhs directly into my tv instead and "wow" big difference.. anyway... Im rambling....

SO we both are on a waiting list for the DH to arrive. I'm just thinking which is the best way to connect the DH. well who ever gets the DH earlier will have the chance to experiment. Lets just hope that we can connect it to the optical output and we can turn down the volume of the speakers but not affecting the signal from the digital out. I'm also planning to hook it up on my television so as not to disturb the sleepyheads! ehehehhehe!

Guy's relax

,

Just plug it in too the digital output on your receiver and turn down the volume (the pioneer has its own volume control right on the headset). I have mine connected to my receiver and can then listen to the TV(Dish), DVD or Xbox just by switching the input on the receiver.

It's good to hear that I'm not the only one anxiously awaiting the delivery of my new Pioneer DH system...! Audio Cubes really seems to be selling a good deal of these units...

Thanks to Astropin and all the others who already own these units who have been so helpful to us new and upcoming owners...
