iPod LOD worth it?

No issues whatsoever with RSA SR71-A at low/med gain using ER4S or UM3X. Definite improvement over listening directly from the iPod with the UM3X. ER4S from the iPod? Forget about it.

Well certainly a RSA Tomahawk, for instance, is designed for use with IEM's - Ray used the SE530 to maximise its performance with IEMs - and there are plenty of amps which have gain switches to adjust the power depending on your headphones.
My SR-71A works brilliantly with IEMs (SE 530/ER-4P/ER-4S) on Lo & Medium gain settings with plenty of volume control. In fact I prefer to use the medium gain setting with my IEMs with the volume knob set at 10/11 'o' clock, and I don't like my music too loud.

I'm not sure which RSA amps I listened to, but they did have a gain switch and it was set to low. The same was true with the Pico and XM4. I have read that one RSA amp has unity gain. The thread I liked also talked about negative gain. That would probably work for me. I listen at 65-70dB. It's hard to get that low if the amp has any gain at all. I'm curious, have you measured how loud you're listening?

The other issue I have with portable amps is that it's too easy to accidentally bump the volume knob and blast your ears. I wouldn't want a portable amp that I can't lock the volume once I set it. I do use my XM4 as a transportable amp to drive non IEMs, but I'd never put it in a pocket or backpack and walk around with it.
