So, the 701/2 has a bigger sound stage then the HD800? I never heard this before..

You haven't heard this before because it is far from the truth.

I do appreciate the 800, but only under 50Hz. Above 50Hz up to 39,800Hz I prefer the 702.

For crying out loud...stop with this HD800 bashing without ever hearing them! The sound stage is excellent when needed and intimate when called upon...unlike the K701/2 which takes even the most intimate sound stage and makes it sound like you're in an airplane hanger. For what it's worth, the sound stage is only around 5-10% bigger than the beyer T1 and no one has noted it overly wide.

Anyone with any real sense who has heard them has had nothing but very positive comments. Now I would recommend that you go have a listen to set first...sheesh.

I woke up a while ago as usual.

And as usual, I was listening to music with my K701 while making some coffee.

And I finally decided to bother to read this thread.

Ok, several things.

1.) Bass of K701 is nearly enough; among headphones I've heard, owned and currently own, it has perfect balance. If you think bass from K701 is lacking, then you are too used to today's muddy, boomy sound.

2.) HD800, IMO, has exact amount of bass that headphones should reproduce. Nothing more, nothing less. It indeed has stronger Bass than K701, but not much difference really.

3.) No, sadly K701 is NOT better than HD800. But it is very close... like, 85% close. Nothing really can outperform K701 in similar range. You are getting 85% performance from headphones which is at least 4 times more expensive.

4.) With current quality of mastering, sadly again, both K701 and HD800 are NOT suitable for modern rock and other pop stuffs. They shine most with any well-mastered recordings (which only few exist if you only look for modern music), and they have perfect synergy with Classical in general and Jazz. But when bricked songs go into the pipe, at worst they become torture machines, at best serious annoyance.

5.) Thus, you better go for headphones that are more forgiving and have bass boosted. In no particular order I can think of now:

HD650
T1
D2/5/7000
Kenwood KH-K1000

I strongly recommend Kenwood KH-K1000, Beyer T1 or HD650.

I'd like to hear the HD800 but thats not going to happen around here. It's about $2k for HD800 here and then they say you need a $1200 cable and a very high end amp. To me the HD800 looks like a rip off of the Sony SA-5000 just a different driver and a lot more plasticy.

$1200 cable are you nuts or just plain ignorant? So the HD800 needs a hocus pocus $1200 cable to sound good? Again, here you go again. Just because they are out of your price range doesn't give you the authority to slag something you have never heard. Don't be bitter...I would love a Ferrari, can never afford one, but I do appreciate them and would never slag them as such.

How on god's earth can you say to me look like a rip off of the SA-5000? Plasticy? I am a Professional Engineer with over 15 years of experience and polymers are often the material of choice for their properties and are engineered as such. Would you prefer a metal headphone that sounded like crap?

Again for the second time: They are among the top two constructed headphones I've ever seen/held/owned. And get this: among the top 2 I've ever heard (along with the beyer T1s)!

Instead of feeling slighted because they are out of your price range, just go out and get a freakin' job (or a better one if you have one already)!!! Instead of lying to yourself that they aren't as good as everyone says...because dude: They absolutely are! Instead you're acting like my 6 year old daughter when she doesn't get what she wants.

You know what, they go for $2000 here in Toronto too (and it actually costs more because of Ontario PST)...not just the Alberta price. Get over it. It is not in the Charter of Rights that every Canadian has a right to own one of these. Instead you have the right to go out and earn a living such that with hard work and perseverance you can earn the funds to do so.

I didn't say I could not afford the HD800. It's more that I am not convinced they are worth it considering the flaws I have heard about them. The difference to me is between a high price and being gouged. Sennheiser came off as the later to me with the HD800. I am looking at the T1 since it is more reasonably priced and hopefully does not need as high of a level of equipment as the HD800 to sound good. Just like you asked Acix if he works for AKG I was wondering if you work for Sennheiser? What kind of Professional Engineer maybe a professional social engineer?

x2. I'll also further add that people that haven't owned or atleast heard something should refrain from posting excessively in its thread...it just adds noise to valuable data points.

No...I real P.Eng. Chemical Engineer...so I know a whole heck about polymers. Just trying to get the point through your thick skull that plastic (and now for the third time) can be (as in the HD800) a highly engineered material that is actually preferable to many others.

The T1 and HD800 are not too far off. Both have strengths and weaknesses and are the TOP 2 dynamic cans I've ever heard or held. And here you are without even being in the same room with them making judgments. What are 6 years old? As Shahrose noted, you posting are noise in this thread and I completely agree.
