I'm still not in possession of an Ipod because most people have them. I prefer the Sony's and will buy one if possible. What I want to know:

There are imitation mp3-players of cheap brands that offer basically the same essential functions as 'official brand' mp3-players and are therefore very attractive if money is a limiting factor but do they offer the same SQ as their 'official brand' competition?

I still prefer buying a Sony mp3-player, know that. Problem is that I can't just buy stuff. Would a 'copy product' do in such a situation even though I really want good sound?

depends on the player, knockoffs are just that. there are some players that will surprise you with good quality and features, depends on the chip set and firmware. might be better to buy last years model than the latest and greatest. the clip+ comes to mind as a good player at a good price.

I have never found a cheap-o MP3 player to have good SQ, and I have bought lots of them.

Buying used is a better way to go. Look for a used Sansa or Cowon or Sony. Or a refurb. Right on the NJ/NY border near me is that Sony refurb store ... I'm lucky!

The Netherlands? Do you have big selections over there?
Some of my cheapo are very nice sounding, others are so-so. You really don't know until you get it. Do you have a list of players in mind? Post here, someone might know.

I have had a nano clone before and the sound wasn't that good.

Sweex is a name that comes to mind.

Knockoffs are cheap for a reason. I would say to try to save up and get the real thing, find one used, or try to find a good one here in the For Sale section.

What you pay, what you get. some times save money will be waste money.
