I would appreciate any input regarding the D4 and D10 with ATHA700 headphones.

Just purchased the D10 as a holiday gift. It hasn't been opened or used.

I now realize that the optical out is not going to be critical (will be using with a Macbook and Airport Express) listening to 192kbps to lossless files using ATH A700 headphones.

Would the dual DACs of the D4 make a big difference (worth the work of reselling the D10 and paying the costs of shipping (about $60 total) or do you think the D10 will be just fine given the headphone level?

Thanks,

Ray

Most of the music that matters will be lossless.

Bought the D10 due to reviews and the optical out. Seeing such good reviews for the D4.
Of course the headphones may be the limiting factor. Just wondering since I am new to the game.

I haven't heard the D4, but I had the D10 and it was plenty fine with my A700s.

Although the DAC performance in the D4 is slightly better than the D10, you have a very fine amp, and I personally don't think that the $60 would be well spent unless you mostly listen to streaming music or CDs played thru your computer.

The differences between the 2 devices are subtle, and will likely not be a factor when using your A700s.

Choosing between the two is more like choosing between a Lexus or a BMW!

save the $60 bucks for later to buy a topkit to roll opamps. after you burn in the D10 (~350hrs) you will really enjoy the difference it makes.
