Another question that I had, did you have issues with the MixAmp powering the DT880? I am a little nervous about the 250 ohm impendance. Would there be any real benefit of getting a separate amp?

Thanks,

I assume that the throat mic works through vibrations. Regardless it does work, and works extremely well with headphones.

Yes- DT880 250ohms works great with just the mixamp. No- there is no real benefit using an additional amp.

Also getting the Zalman mic

The Ultrasone HFI 780's are the worst headphones i've tried/owned for gaming, due to their very small soundstage. They also did not work well with Dolby Headphone. Great bass and detail, but poor soundstage.

EAX does via software.
Anyway, the AD700's bass EQ'ed = the best for gaming. I tried time and time again using my DT880/600 and AD700 and I always go back to the AD700's for FPS and directional gaming. To give you to most gaming advantage, go for the AD700's.

My current computer gaming setup is as follows:

Headphones: Denon AH-D5000
Amp: Ibasso D10 Cobra (hooked up via optical from x-fi sound card)
Mic: Zalman clip on mic

I use this setup for every day use from listening to music to playing games and watching movies. I really enjoy the bass/sound stage of the AH-D5000's.

I really liked the mixamp because you can connect to anything but the headphones lack base and I could not distinguish directional cues very well. I was really expecting home theater quality sound and feel that it was overpriced.

After searching through the forums I am now considering the following setup:

-Amplifier-
A40 MixAmp (for game consoles) $130
1. For PC- Disable Dolby and use as a regular Amp. (only because I have onboard sound)
2. For Console Gaming – Enable Dolby

Any thoughts about this? Are there any other Amps out there that allow connection to gaming consoles?

-Headphones-
1. Ultrasone HFI-780 ($212)
2. Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 ($276)
3. Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 ($85) Any thought on these? I read that they lack base but are well priced.
3. Sennheiser HD595 ($164) Any thoughts on these? Well priced. How is the base and audio positioning?

-Microphone-
Zalman Microphone Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity ($15)

I am open to any suggestions. I am just throwing stuff out there as a starting point. I’m trying to keep it below $275 if possible so if I go with the AD-900 I will not be able to get an amp and my pc sound card is onboard sound (fake Creative X-FI). I can live without console gaming for a while (only buy console titles if they are not available for pc) and ditch the amp but if I go this high I am expecting home theater quality sound.

Thanks,

im having same problem finding a pair of good quality gamer phones with mic...
when i game i use my pioneer dir800c wireless ir system, i would use my denon 7000, but for some stupid reason opitcal in wont sound from xbox on my aduio technica ha25 d amp/dac, this dac also doesnt allow sound to play from ripped dvd to my pc?????????????????????????anyone??????????
---i can use eht d7000 with the bass staiotion of the pioneer dir 800c headjack output, but its only 1/////////////8 and then i have to usse adapter, which i donot liike to do, but the pioneer dir800c work prett aewome, they are super light weght with wxcellent clarity and suroound sound, A plus on sound and for being a quiet IR wireless can, D for build quality, they are cheap, i broke em cuz i sat on em, but they do sound excellent $250. the best part about them is the base station reciever whcih screams of much better good quality and i dare say its worth it just for the reciever with its optical in, coaxial in and anlog in a dn a swithc between all three, best part ist has headphone output Dolby digital settings{(filters rather) and dolby headphone 1,2,3, some hate the filtered dolbyy headphone, i can say if your comparing it from the experience on your laptop or pc dolby headphone,, the laptops isnt near as good as the serperate hardware............... i personally dont like it for my music, and some movies i like it and some i dont, but i hand down enjoy the dolby headphone settings for watching news or reality tv etc.
even just being a filter they have really manage to make people talking (news anchors etc) sound closer or further away from you,,,, not like the reall thing but very nice to change up the sound............................................. sadly the dhp 800 can which comes with them is super cheap but A+ sound, could use more bass but still their my favorite wireless can, and i prefer bass so they really muit have some saving qualites,, like i said they are cheap and i broke them and fixed and to be honest, ill buy another pair just because they are so small and crystal clear and light weight,, light weight is the key for me.
--------

it seems all gamer phones suck compared to hifi ones except for the Psyko $300.

so does that amp work with any phone? way cool so i could use my earbuds with that amp? how about earbuds with a built in mic??? even cooler

isnt it the xbox tiny jack? is ther an adapter to 1/8 inch and where do u get it?

ive talked with a few headfier who really love the audio technica 900's
but i dont think aduio technica is that well known for having alot of bass.
ive never tried them i couldnt tell you, but in that price range i would personlly get the denon 2000 or the akg 702(read about thier bass though, i think i remeber them being a little light, i dcould be wrong)

make sure you get a closed can,, i think some of ultrasones are open

if i had to pick an ultrasone i would pick their hifi 220 or the 780(i think i remember readin a less than good review so i would double check if i were you) the edition 8 look awesome but my next bass heavy can will definitley be the jvc dx1000 to do direct compare to my Denon 7000(which i love awesome bass i paid $570 , but they have a crappy chord,

if you wont bass go for the denon, i highly reccomend them

but if its between sennheiser and ultrasone i personlly would go with ultrasone

I tried the freinds' AD900 and it is not worth the price differnce from the ad700.

All i really noticed is that the bass is a bit better, but not that much.

The AD700 will give you almost the same audio from the 900 for much less.

Save money and go for the 700's.

yea but do they ad models have a built in mic????????????

Assuming that you are referring to the MixAmp, it should work with any headphone although I don't know how well it will work with higher impendance headphones. Foe-hammer has confirmed that they work well with the DT880s and no further amplification is needed (This is the route that I am going to take). As for earbuds with a built in mic, they will not work as it has its own mic input (maybe you need some sort of splitter cable??)

If you use the Mixamp it will bring all of the cables.

By the way, the Astro Mixamp has been updated and a new version is available on their website. The only differences seem to be a cosmetic update and it is now fully compatible with PS3 (no additional cables necessary). I was really hoping for DTS support but oh well.

I have the zalman clip mic, and do not like it.

Foe-hammer was there any particular reason you did not like the Zalman mic?

Does anyone know if DH messes with EQ? When I had my mixamp with the A40 headset, I tried to increase the base with EQ but there was no affect at all. Also, does anyone know if sound effects such as EAX and others from a sound card stack well with DH? Should DH be disabled or sound card affects disabled?

Thanks,

I'm also about to pull the trigger on the DT880/250+MixAmp setup but I found these 2 separate opinions from other boards:

“I also use a mini headphone amp to drive the DT880s. The MixAmp didn't have enough power to properly drive the cans, they sound a tad ****ty without them.”

“As far as the mixamp not having enough juice for them, it seemed like I had to crank the volume very high to get them to sound full. If you were to use voice with them as well you would most likely balance more towards voice than game (lowering the game volume), and then you may need to max out the mixamp to get enough volume. For single player it may be ok.”

I know Foe-hammer said the MixAmp drives the 250s fine, but would considering the 32 ohm version be blasphemous?

It sucks at doing what it is meant for, namely picking up your voice. No matter where it is placed on the cable, i had to yell for others to hear me.

The MixAmp drives the 250ohm dt880's just fine- no distortion and plenty loud enough. I used to use my vhp-2 desktop amp with the mixamp to drive the dt880's. And while it did give more room for max volume, that was about it. So i went to just using the MixAmp. I turn the large master volume knob on the mixamp to max, and have the smaller knob turned to 12:00 - 2:00. Anything before 12:00 is too loud. This is for multiplayer gaming; CoD and Halo.
