I wonder if anyone here has successfully converted their 5.1 remaster of Still Life into 2.0 WAV format?
I'm not overly happy with the stereo mix, so I want to see if the 5.1 will sound better in stereo form.

It is not a DVD-A disc, otherwise I would know to use DVD-A explorer. I'm quite sure it's just a standard DVD rom.

If it's just a standard DVD rom all you have to do is to use dvd decrypter to extract the AC3 5.1 track to your hard disk, then use foobar2000 with an ac3 decoder plugin to convert to whatever format you like applying a downmix ( and resampling, if you have troubles with 48Khz ) dsp.

Thanks for the advice. I opened up the AC3 tracks in Foobar, exported them as WAV files, then I opened them up in Audacity. I then lowered the gain of all the channels (to avoid clipping), exported them as stereo wav files, and voila!

Wow, it sounds absolutely amazing

How does the stereo downlmixing sound? I was considering doing using this using Handbrake to my Ghost Reveries DVD to compare to the CD release.

It sounds amazing. Everything is distinct and separated. There is no longer any clipping or distortion.

Where did you get a Ghost Reveries DVD from? I didn't even know they released Ghost Reveries on a DVD!

I didn't either until my copy arrived in the mail. The DVD has a documentary that I haven't seen yet, a director's cut video of The Grand Conjuration, and a 5.1 mix of the Ghost Reveries album.

That is awesome. I'm going to try to hunt a copy down.

It's part of a special edition release of the album as a digipack. The first disc is the album with Soldier of Fortune (a bonus track that many don't like), the second disc is a DVD just as Moontan13 described. I'm ripping it now. Can't wait to head how it sounds.

EDIT: Partly successful. Handbrake can't separate the audio and video files... but I can downmix the audio, store the video at a hideously low bitrate and voila, m4v file containing high quality audio and low quality video. Close enough.

Sounds good.

Among other things, I found my downmix of the 5.1 mix to have much improved (wider) soundstage. It was fun to mess with the volumes of the different channels, I ended up only lowering volume for the back two speakers a bit and downmixed using Audition 3.

Leaving it in WAV is probably overkill as ac3 is not lossless.

Yeah, I exported it was WAV (in Audacity) and then used dbPowerAmp to convert the files to FLAC-5.
