Is the Grado 225 the right headphone for ME?

Okay guys:

I'm not planning on getting an amp. I believe I'll stick to a high quality source instead. I plan to listen through my desktop and my iPod.
On my desktop, I have an older x-fi fatal1ty edition sound card, but I believe it yields fairly good sound. I read that for the 150-250 range that Grados are one of the best headphones to go UNAMPED. This is important to me as I understand the physics and why some headphones simply need to be amped since they draw so much power and aren't as sensitive. I also looked at the sr80i, senn's 555 and 595s, Audio Technica ATH-AD700 (for $86 bucks). I think the 225 is the sweet spot in Grado's line up in terms of price/performance. I'm currently listening through the icemat siberia headphones and I hope I'll notice a nice improvement with these future phones.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Congrats Valiente! (I hope you like the PA2V2. I love mine--great value and punch!--and Gary is an awesome guy to deal with.)

I'd also like to throw the obligatory (also Grado-made) Alessandro MS-1(i) in the ring as well. I definitely prefer it to the SR-60 or even the SR-125.

Okay, Since I'm a very price savvy shopper I've narrowed my choice down between the Audio-Technica ATH AD700 FOR 88 ON AMAZON or the 225s. My question is if the AD700s sound as good UNAMPED as do the Grados? I looked at the 700s SPL and impedence and the numbers are identical to the Grado line. So I'm guessing this should sound good unamped too.

You'll be back.

Right around now, you are asking yourself if the Grados would have had more punch down low than the AD700, and the answer is a resounding 'Yes !'.

Yeah... I'll give you six months before you end up rocking out to a swell pair of MS-1i's.

I hope so, but I've had headphones that I thought were a good value, but after a while, I realized that even if they had come to me as a gift, I still wouldn't want to listen to them. Case in point: the Beyer DT770 Pro/80

At first I thought those Beyers were great, and for a paltry $150. After a couple of weeks I couldn't stand the recessed mids, sibilant treble and boomy gheto-blaster bass. I learned that when it comes to audio gear that you spend anywhere from 5-50 hours a week listening to, get what you will enjoy the most. In the long run the price becomes irrelevant. A year ago I would never have considered spending over $300 on a pair of headphones. Since I got my D7000's I feel like I got a real bargain (especially after a tuned them a bit with a variation of the Markl mod).
