My 24/96 files were free due to a net promotion shown on a thread of head-fi. But it seems the promotion is now closed and the link is no longer available.

I don't have my 801 yet, or I would. Are the files in the flash memory WMA lossless files or WMA lossy files? I have a lot of WMA lossless files

I just wonder if I need to start converting all of my music to FLAC in order to be able to use it with this player.

I'd say do the conversion anyway.. FLAC is just easier for everything from here on.. and though it can't sound better then the wma because thats the source, flac has been noticed to be better even then alac and wma lossless by a few people on here

I'm not sure if I will if the 801 does play the WMA files. As you say the sound cannot improve, and it seems that it might even degrade the quality a little to do the conversion.

Also my software for converting is very slooooow, so it would literally take days.

I will probably just wait and see when my 801 arrives whether it works with the WMA files or not.

Sorry to hear that you haven't got it. I don't use WMA files at at all but just noticed that there are some files ended with WMA in the flash memory. Please tell me how can I tell if it's lossless or not so that I may check it out.

WMA lossless files would have very high bitrates in the 650 to 850 kbps range. It is a variable bit rate, so there is a lot of variation. But if the bit rate is in that range, it is probably a lossless file. If you transfer the file to a PC computer, you can just hover your mouse over the file and it will tell you the bitrate.

Thanks, and no problem if you don't get around to it out or if it turns out they are lower bitrate lossy files.

The wma filesin the flash memory are 128k. So not lostless, I guess.

Does criticism get modded in this thread?

At first I must say that I was really positively surprised by it's sound: the clarity, detail and an impressive soundstage was all there, but same cannot be said about "music".
I've only listened to it for about an hour with my srh840s and while everything is amazingly controlled, I truly struggle to hear the notes at some parts of the frequency response, especially bass section. It's fast and detailed, but c'mon, where is the melody!?!? Material from Herbie Hancock and Coltrane sounded even lifeless. It's sort of a 'boom' phenomenon: Everything surrounds you and tries to compete for attention. I could even hear the drummer's chair squeak in Hancock's 'Chameleon' amongst all the hiss

I'm hoping longer burn-in will settle things, though I'm not a very firm believer in the burn-in of transistor gadgets..
So, in everything else it beats my Classic 160gb/GS Voyager/SRH840 combo except in the ability to play notes/melodies (even in complex passages) so far. I'll try out the Voyager with the 801's line out soon as well to see whether the bottleneck was the on board amplifier.

Also, is anyone's back panel a little loose? It cracks about a half millimeter and every time I press buttons, it moves and makes noise..

the paint job isnt perfect(i m totally happy with it not being perfect lol) but hey~ u can only expect perfect paint job from huge factory to have it perfect (easy~ not perfect simply means i m being really really picky and micro scope it)

the screen inside u can tell they have those micro tiny hair line

we all know any thing that has to go though hand might just have them

i can swallow that coz i know its only normal if its mostly hand assemble in most parts instead of machine arm assemble~ besides, it really isnt scratch ~ its not

i dont have opinion about electropop's comment about the music~until i hear what she is hearing 1st.
