These will be driven by an iPhone and for use on train & NYC subway. I will
be listening mostly to rock (Arctic Monkeys, Shins and female vocals), and in the past I have been biased toward tube amps with minimonitors, so I prefer romantic midrange to analytic sound that is too forward. Currently leaning toward Senn IE7s while the cheaper voice in me wonders if I should just get Westone UM1s, but I am open t any other suggestions for this price range, thanks

alot of ppl recommend RE0 tho i havn't heard it u might like to read up on the reviews there r heaps of them around.
from what i've read the UM1's a bit 'boring' so i never got around to getting them
if the IE7 sound anything like the IE8s they would be good for you, the IE8s are laid back, has a nice flow to it in my opinion... i love romantic music as well.... i love female vocals with the large sound stage of the IE8s also the details really bring out the emotions....
as for rock all i can tell you the IE8's bass really tightens up after a few hundred hours...
maybe you might look around for a second hand IE8 they're around 200 in the sales forum...
from my point of view better spend more on a second hand IEM then getting lower ends that don't really sound good...
the down side to the IE series is that they're open, so they don't isolate very well... i'm not sure about train... but i can't hear anything from the background when i have my music on with my IE8s on the buses...

I owned the IE8 and IE7, good phones. In that price range, I like the Klipsch S4s and the Cresyn C750E, which both are under $100 in fact, and to me, punch above their weight.

If you want to spend closer to $200, I'd save and get the UM3X, used if possble (for lower price).

I like Westone, had the W3s too, but didn't care much for the UM1.

For 200, you could find yourself listening to a pair of used TF10 pro. I doubt any IEM in that price range could compete.

RE-0 sound intriguing but can an iPhone realistically drive them? I am not going to lug around another dedicated amp. Thanks for the tip about TF 10s but I just can't see myself buying something via a website that lists a hotel in Zhuhai PRC as it's address, much as I like Zhuhai and Macau.

how much is IE7 selling for these days?

if its cheaper..go for it.

the highs are great but they dont sparkle much.....otherwise.. Bass and mids are great.

infact they have the best Bass in an IEM...highly detailed and tamed

Klipsch Custom 3 are really good for rock and they has spurb forward, warm, airy and detailed midrange(it's on same level of SE530 but more alive) and different instruments sound so real and punchy(like drums, guitars). BTW it has Klipsch signature warm sound, highs are also detailed and Bass is deep, crisp and well defind.
