These are usually called classical cans, but every time I play some ambient-type music (I'm not much of a fan, but probably will be soon) I'm getting washed away in huge waves of sonic energy... the HD-580 seems to be the best ambient/trance cans I've heard yet! Not only ambient, but a lot of synthesized "new age" should sound awesome with these as well. Something about the bass characteristics just... it's unspeakable. One could disappear into the sound and be swept into another dimension.

Anyone else ever get this with their HD-580 or HD-600? I actually think I like these better for soundscape-type stuff than for classical, although they seem to excel in the latter category as well.

I feel the same way as you. With well recorded ambient stuff, it just sounds so incredible. Btw, I have been swept into another dimension with the HD600's

. I also agree with you that the bass has much to do with it. It just seems like the sounds are coming from all over you, and in a way that's, well, ambient.

P.S. just noticed your musical preferences... I guess this wasn't such a well kept secret of the 600/580 after all.

Fewtch, I'd never really thought about the HD580's / 600's as trance headphones before. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you would stop putting ideas in my head

I thank you

Yeah, I didn't either... until I listened to some. They're trance headphones (but better listen at a meet or something first before evoking more wallet destruction

). I'd chalk it up to Senn's "diffuse field" voicing which tries to make sound seem to come from all directions... I hadn't connected this with trance or ambient until I actually listened to some, but it makes sense that the two would fit together perfectly.

They definitely aren't beats&rhymes or electric guitar cans, if that makes you feel any better...

I think that the 580/600 are excellent all around headphones, not just for the specific types of music you mentioned. I find them to be very involving with rock music, blues and jazz. I've seen many posts saying that these phones aren't great for rock, frankly, I'm at a loss why anyone would say that. The bass extension is there, the sound stage, the excitement. What's missing?

Too tired at the moment to think of much (I'm off to bed), but if you have the "Titanic" soundtrack handy, listen to the first few minutes of track 11, "A Promise Kept" -- very ambient-ish track with a lot of deep bass that demonstrates what the HD600 can do with this sort of material. Try some other various tracks also (if you have the CD and can stand the music

Dunno... I've tried listening to stuff like early Rush, and the music just isn't terribly involving. No "veil," but there's an emotional distance from this kind of music that doesn't seem conducive to "rocking out" with these cans. Just my opinion -- it seems to me that the HD580/600 does some things extremely well that few other cans do, and what it doesn't do well is covered by almost anything else (so it's just a matter of unplugging them and jacking in something else when the mood hits).

I wouldn't even blame it on the HD-580/600 directly, but on the way they're voiced for a diffuse soundfield and their wide open, airy character (which to me is both good and bad, depending on the music). Might just be me, but hard rock/metal and hip-hop has to be right in my face or I don't enjoy it much. I want volume, punch, slam and kick with that kind of stuff (ala Sony MDR-7506).

Hmmm... I haven't found to be the case at all. I find that I get completely involved and immersed in music with these cans.

Is everyone talking about stuff like Yanni produces? If so, I just got here by accident. I've never seen you guys before in my life!!!

You can say that again! Apollo is probably the one I listen to the most of his. I have a ton of space/ambient cds and the Senns are a great match. Waiting for an Earmax Pro for my Sony 3Ks before I release 'em on the ambient stuff. So far I've been impressed with the sonys... but usually gravitate back to the 600s...
