Are the RE-0s a must buy at the $99 price point?

i havent heard the s4 but id guess it has more bass quantity/impact.. but i'd also guess that the re0 is superior in every other way(sonically)

if you look at it this way, the s4 is an $80 earphone w/ average reviews... the re0 was originally a $169 earphone which was highly praised on head-fi, but now that it's been on sale for $99 - you'd be hard pressed to find anyone say it's not worth it

but if you factor in build quality/comfort/durability, then it's a bit more even imo

I found them to be a bargain at their original price. I guess it depends a bit on whether you like their detailed sound and light, tight bass. During the last months where I have begun using them again and comparing them to some other in-ears they are still ahead of the bunch when it comes to clarity and speed. At $99 I think they are pretty much of the chart as far as value goes.

Bass wise I found the amount to vary quite a bit from tip to tip and actually made me revert back to the medium sized single flange.

As far as the cracked case goes, how the hell did you manage to do that? I mean they are made of metal.

The metal casing isn't a solid single piece. Obviously, it's composed of more than one part held together by either glue or threads. The seam between the machined diamonds and the rounded hemisphere back opens up with some people's headphones, since the tolerances on the threading isn't good enough.

Sound has also disappeared on occasion from others' headphones, presumably because the wire has come apart near in the strain relief near where the cord enters the casing.

It just so happened that both of these problems happened to me, quite a horrible coincidence really. I haven't heard that many other people complain about theirs failing, so I don't think this necessarily means that the RE0 should be absolutely avoided.

Ordered a set of RE0's last night. Can't wait for them to come in. Wasn't so sure about them at first, but I'll find out soon. I can't wait to find out how much better they are than my UHP336's too.

Will my BSG Cmoy be a good enough amp for them, or will they sound substantially better with a more expensive amp?

They don't really need an amp at all. I would ditch the cmoy and run them straight out of your dap as I doubt it will be of benefit.

Of course an amp isn't always necessary, but it's provided a significant improvement with all my gear I've used it with so far. I was wondering if this would improve even more with a better amp and RE0's. My cmoy kills the hiss and hard drive feedback with my Zune, and it's definitely earned its velcro.

It's going to be used with my iPod much more than with my Zune due to Rockbox. Are you saying I'd be better off with the iPod headphone out than the line out with the RE0? So far, I've liked the line out much better than the headphone out with my headphones and IEMs. My Zune's headphone out is pretty good unamped, but it's too hissy and the volume control sucks.

The hiss you've experienced is completely the fault of your UHP336. Their ridiculous sensitivity and low impedance is the reason I rather dislike them in the first place. The RE0 have pretty high impedance so they won't hiss. I don't use my iPod much since I prefer my Sansas and cowon, but the Line Out is the only way I can imagine justifying an amp.

I'm not saying an amp is always useless; just that portable amps are often overrated, for which I blame the placebo effect - people expect an amp to improve sound so they end up actually hearing an improvement. In reality, it is often a marginal change that isn't necessarily for the better, especially with low-end portable amps. This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

I've had both problems too but they sound amazing and at the price, I wouldn't trade them for anything else.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that. My cmoy is going to stay in my rig for now. I may get a Clip+ later on, but it would probably sound pretty good unamped out of that.

I have consistently heard only good things about the RE-0, i am very tempted to get a pair, but i have never splurged on earphones, but this could be where i pop my higher priced earphone cherry.

Mine just came in today, and I'm really surprised at how good they are. Granted UHP336's to RE0's is a big jump, but they still sound amazing for the price. Only have about 5 hours on mine so far, but they sound amazing. More bass quantity would be nice, but it's got pretty good bass quality so far. I've never heard Chris Squire sound so good. They fit much more nicely than the 336's. I wish I would have bought them when the sale started, but better late than never.

Thanks everyone for all the reviews and info on the sale. Best upgrade I've done so far.

the RE-0 are lots better however they have a very different sound and a hell of a lot less bass so you may not prefer them over the denons
