Faulty IE8s, or usual issue with IEMs/IE8s?

Hi guys -

My IE8s arrived yesterday, but unfortunately they seem to be faulty. The 3.5 jack can't be moved/touched at all without sending heavy feedback, and takes a little wiggling then being left completely alone to get both channels actually outputting sound - and then with different levels of balance until I get it "just right". I *think* I can get them working properly after a little hassle, but I'm not 100% sure and I figure you shouldn't really have nagging doubts for expensive products...

I'm assuming this isn't normal, just wanted to check before I kicked up a fuss.

Bonus question: Warrenty with Sennheiser, or Play.com (who are a bit rubbish to actually get in touch with?)

Cheers!

If someone's faked the Sennheiser packaging that well it's quite impressive. Are there cases of big bulk retailers selling fakes? Play.com is a big site in the UK, probably the biggest media type seller.

Not an issue at all at my IE8s,. so yes, fake or faulty. But could be the source too of course, did you check with different sources?

Hi there, It's a problem that goes away with usage. If 3-4 days pass by and the problem hasn't been resolved then it's a faulty IE8. However, myself and a few others had this problem initially. This was noted to be the case because IE8 uses a nickel jack rather being a gold plated jack which reduces the aforementioned problems

what?? nickel jacks vs gold plated means nothing. if there's in issue I dont see how it could possibly be that. I dont know what the problem is, but gold plating is only to stop oxidization. it has no effect on how a connector deals with static charge, which is what I think this is; especially if it goes away.

My IE8s had the same problem during their early days. It SHOULD go away with usage. Maybe it's the cable 'burning in'. Then again, I'm not so sure. But it did go away after 1-2 days for me.

Nah, I'd say it's your source. My IE8 does the same thing with my desktop's soundcard,
I have to spend five minutes to find the right spot so I can hear both channels, otherwise
it's left or right. It's fine with my laptop or any other source I have, so try a few sources
and if it's still like this, contact play.com for a refund or exchange.

I agree with decay. My old soundcard would only output one channel unless the connector was pushed into a different position. Check using different sources. Oh, and I highly doubt Play.com is selling fakes.

I never had that problem with mine. The cable/connector have always been super silent.

Source is my iphone 3gs, fine under ibuds and cx300s. Tested with PC too, fine if I can get the cable "just so", but demonstrate same feedback when you give the jack a little wiggle.

Just to clarify a little, and report back after more usage: I walked 20mins to the shops and back over lunch. Plugged into iphone, bit of a wiggle and they sounded OK after a little static/imbalance of channels. Half way of my walk to boots, I stepped down a curb and the jolt moved my phone, giving a big burst of interference until I re-jiggled the jack.

I can replicate by flexing the cable in the 3.5mm housing up and down.

How much time do you have before you have to return it?
I never had to jiggle the jack, although it's somewhat sensitive to movement in the first five days. Give it 2 more days, if it still doesn't work ask play.com for an exchange or refund.
