Nice review, shame about the scratches etc. I would defiantly let you distributor know about them and see what they can work out. You don't want to waiting 3 months for a replacement.

Congrats! Glad they starting with shipping and maybe more folks will get their PS1000 within short time from now, so we can enjoy a bit of Grado magic thread instead of, well, instead...

Not that nice to know about those scratches etc..., not good. I mean, you was waiting for so long and now this, pfff, man...
If I were you I would contact the dealer directly and tell them your points, just start from there, imo.

Other than that, do post some pics and more impressions please.

indeed. I'd like to now how they sound without a $4k amp. Seems like a bad trend with the recent uber expensive cans of late. Don't get me wrong I think top end gear should always shine when properly mated/matched but I don't think people should have to spend an insane amount of $$ on amps and sources to get a $1300/$1700 headphone to sound good.

Ok, with that said I am very interested to read some more impressions on these. Sorry to hear about your cosmetic issues, I'm sure they will have a pristine replacement to you in a hurry.

Yesterday i tried the hd 800 with x can v8 and it did a good job driving them.(i just wish i had these cans for a few days in my home)

To the op,does the ps 1000 have problems with sibilince?I ask because people here say that gs 1000 has very hot treble(although people claim the same for the hd 800,something i personaly didn't find to be true,at least in my rig)

I have the GS 1000. I would say no. The PS 1000 is very refined no doubt, but it seems like a different animal than the GS 1000. You know you have a good headphone when you don't have to tell yourself, "I sure hope they sound better after burnin". You can forget about burnin with these, they sound freakin great out of the box, no need to wait for anything, just enjoy what you have right now and if it gets better, it's just gravy. Also, I have thrown some not so good pop/rock recordings in, and one thing I am really liking is the PS 1000 seems to smooth everything over.

I hated the treble on the GS 1000. I found it a little recessed, yet hot at the same time. Things really improved with the GS 1000 when I added the EAR HP 4. But the PS 1000 is another level. With the PS 1000 you get better extension with out the harshness. I am very sensitive to brightness and sibilance and so far it is a non issue with the PS 1000. Another thing that is a huge plus is the detail is so good you can keep the volume relatively low while listening.

Thank you Kclone.I'm thinking to upgrade from my hd 600(although i like them)to something like hd 800 or ps1000(it's very expensive though)
I am gonna try them(fortunatelly there is a local grado distributor here).
I'm not in a hurry because i don't have the money yet,so i'll have plenty of time to try out some hi-end cans.
But it's very positive that you don't hear sibilance with these.Do you think they emphasize a part of the spectrum(bass for example?)or add too much colour to the sound?

Congrats on the phones. I am relieved to hear that they sound great. However I am very disappointed with the quality control, especially since your pair are one of the first PS1000 to be shipped. Hopefully my pair will arrive today (I also was not impressed with the ground shipping from Grado instead of some form of air shipping (even 3 day) since more things can go wrong with ground shipping and for such an expensive phone, but I digress). Anyway, the PS1000 will be pitted against my HD800 (and UE9) in some form of cage death match. I like the HD800, fantastic detail and soundstaging but to my ears in my rig they are slightly bright and thin and lack the bass impact of the better closed headphones that I have heard: UE9, L3000, DX1000 and PS-1. In audiophile terms they are certainly an upgrade to my UE9 but they just don't rock, that is, I hear all of the detail but at times they don't present a coherent picture.

That's exactly what the PS-1 does to bad recordings and something that really bothered me about them. It was an artificial glossing in the treble that became tiring in time for my taste anyway.

It's nice to enjoy impressions vicariously through headfiers on the HD800 and PS-1000 here without any affect on my wallet

- I've been and remain perfectly content with my current phones.... well except for that darned JH13 which becons me.

I just wonder about the timbre on the PS-1000. Does it sound like the PS-1 compared to RS-1. I really like the timbre on the wooden phones, but just as the PS-1 refined areas compared to the RS-1, it seems like the PS-1000 refines areas of the GS-1000, albeit at almost twice the price ...

I think changing tubes, IC or CDP will have some influence, IC could be enough, it did in my previous GS1k set up, but I always preferred the natural clarity and musicality of GS1k instead of to dark/warmish presentation. For example if you going to use some 6SL7 COSSOR instead of even 6SU7 Tung Sols, which are quite rich by comparison, than you may get the great results with PS1000. This tube, COSSOR, is crystal clear, airy with huge space/staging and deep, very controlled bass. I tried this tube on Zana+GS1000 and was simply blown away, and that's with amp that absolutely not tubby sounding one, so just guessing, if you going to put them in EAR, consider that PS1000 are fuller/warmer, it can get them there where nirvana isn't strange word, if you know what I mean...Or you can use some combination of tubes, say, 2x Tung Sols as input and 2x COSSOR, or else, as output one...
It would be really great to read more of your impressions when you roll some tubes, so , if you can, please doe and let us know...THX

The bad news for me is that after many bad reports of the PS-1000 at CJ2009 I was just starting to consider getting the HD-800 instead (HD-800 is quite cheaper and have greater price diffrence in Canada compared to PS-1000).

Bad reports? It is more of lack of reports on PS-1000.

How many PS-1000 were present at CJ?

Jun 23, 2009 at 4:30 PM Post #28 of 51
If you search carefully they're a few reports (or comments) all pretty much saying they were too bass heavy. To my knowledge there was only one setup, in TTVJ booth, and were hooked to the TTVJ Millet 307A.

If someone here went to CJ2009 just correct me if I'm wrong.

I read into that statement the same way. Also interestingly, the PS-1 was twice the price of the RS-1 when new.

Different taste. IMO, it is absolutely necessary for me to to get phones that lesson the pain of bad recordings or a better way of putting it is making bad recordings sound better. They are more enjoyable that way. I care about how the music sounds more than anything else. If I wanted only stuff that was extreemly revealing, then I wouldn't be able to enjoy a lot of my music.

Yeah, that darn JH13 is calling me as well.
