I'm inclined to roll some tubes on my preamp and could do with some recommendations for a pair of 6922 tubes.

Prefer some recs that don't break the bank but willing to spend within reason.

Personally i've tried a pair of Mullards and a set of Bugle Boys in my Melos. I perfer the Bugle Boys, very dynamic and Punchy with good bass. The Mullards are a little light in comparison. I'm planning on building up a 6922 collection over the next year, im planning to buy cheap used pairs until i find my perfect tubes, then buy a few keepers.

Good Luck

My favorites that I have tried have been Amperex PQ white label 6922s, but these are pricey anymore.

A nice current tube is the ElectroHarmonix EH6922. Sound good and nice and quiet.

I was cruising ebay last night looking at 6922 tubes and it is amazing the price differences between some tubes!

Actually This page seems to be on spot on the tubes I bought anyway. Go to Part 2 directly.

Joe's Tube Lore

If you can score some Amperex 6922, White Labels or even a D-getter one that should make you happy for a while.

Saw some selling at ebay once in a while.

EDIT: Sorry didn't notice some1x's post. Anyway. Try Amperex. I won a bid way back for 50 for 4 white labels rebranded to HP. They sound fantastic. =)

depends on your application, OP....some amps (analytical) like the syrupy tubes of the english and dutch, while others (warm) like the precision of the germans

budget is of course always a consideration and the 6922 market has experienced extreme upward pressure due to every tube item on the planet using the tube (or so it seems) ... i'd stay away from the chinese and russians -- the jan sylvanias are a good cheap entry tube; troll the boards too for good used deals

i've always liked the amperex too (US or Dutch (particularly the large halo getters)) -- sweet and controlled, detailed with good extension

Pick up a pair of Russian 6H23-EB for about $20 and compare them w/ the expensive options out there. I believe you will be surprised.

The so-called Russian super-tube will not work in all amps, as it uses about twice the plate current as other members of the 6922 family. I wanted to try it in my Music Reference preamp (never got around to it), but I've read high praise of this 6H23 tube.

I was very happy with a set of Sylvania JAN 6922's in that preamp.

Actually the 6H23N or the 6H23N-EB are direct replacements for the 6922. See: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/thetu...e/RU-6H23P.pdf

The one that is not a direct replacement is the 6N1P. This because it draws more filament current than many stock power supplies can provide. Did I mention they run hot!

Based on my experience with many Russian 6DJ8/6922 tubes I can not agree w/ this statement. The Russian tubes have worked very well and sound fantastic IMO.
