This is my review after thoroughly testing the SRH 940s yesterday.

Quote:
Hmmmm - interesting.  I read it.  Pleased they work for you, but as an ex owner of both (so I had quite a bit of time with both), here's what I think .....

Suggest you google SRH940 and "broken headband".  It's one of the poorest builds Shure ever put together and has a history of breaking - even if you take immaculate care of them.  As far as long term comfort goes - those bumps on the headband also got annoying after a while for me.  As far as comfort and build goes - the DT880 are miles ahead.  Guarantee the majority will think the same.

.........

im browsing the thread because im in the middle of deciding between pro and premium. pro is sold locally, but im leaning towards premium at the moment.
they dont sell premium where im at and im still looking where i can order this internationally.

i second the notion of shure 940 having a mediocre build. mine was messed up after 2 and a half months. i bought the shure 940 knowing that it will be my ONE and ONLY headphone for the next several years. so i took good care of it. Taking good care of it is a massive understatement.

after 2 and a half months of taking care of it more than i took care of my girlfriend, the headband tilted to the right so much that the left side of my head touches the headband plastic. it's just simply not wearable anymore.

shure asia pacific redirect my case to the local dealer. The local dealer only have 1 year warranty, not 2 years that's written for the 940 product description, and the local dealer dont want to cover the warranty. so im stuck with a tilted unwearable headphone. after 2 and a half months of extreme care.

long story short, i managed to get a replacement. the replacement that i got, the left side swivel is creaky. Can you imagine that? the replacement isn't even good.
i showed them that the replacement isn't good and ask replacement for the replacement, they declined.

Also, i don't have a warranty anymore because they told me that the 1 year warranty is over when i get that replacement.

bravo shure.

it's a cautious tale if you're considering dt880 or shure 940.

if you live in US or Japan or anywhere where Shure service is impeccable and will handle the headband case, then probably it's good. but if you're like me that you live in Asia Pacific, think twice before buying and check first how good your local dealer is with handling physical damage.

the headphone has a mediocre build. at least what i got.

Why?

clamp force. vanity reason. it looks better to me.

Disagree about the vanity. I think the Pro looks better, and I like the coiled cord and the fact you can unclip the headband covering and replace it for a few dollars. Clamping force can be fixed in 2 seconds: just bend the metal at the fork outwards slightly.

Well, I tend to agree that the Premium does look better... case in point:

The Pro uses protein leather (read: fake leather), which doesn't feel quite as soft as real leather. Also, unclipping it takes just a bit of effort, but putting it on is an entirely different matter. If you have actually tried to take that part of (for recabling), then you'd know it is kind of a hassle putting it back.

Premium:

I think the aluminum pieces on either side and the silver pivot pieces are more handsome.

Leather headband is infinitely more comfortable than protein leather, or at least it feels nicer, and no obnoxious looking buttons.

And the DT880 text on the ear cups on the premium is etched onto a plate instead of directly on the grille, which again does make it feel more "premium".

As for coiled vs straight cable, I think I'd personally prefer straight because straight doesn't get tangled up like coiled. Coiled cabling seems like a good way to have a long cable in a more compact form, but when it gets tangled up after some years of use, oh man, it gets annoying. I know because my dad's ATH-M50 does that, and it annoys him to no end. I'll get him a replacement M50X soon, but exploring other alternatives for now.

So IMO, the premium does look and feel more "premium" than the Pro version. The Pro has a more utilitarian feel to it. In no way is it an inferior headphone, though, just that I think I'd grab the Premium version again if I ever get to own a DT880 (for the 4th time!).

I too perfer the premium version. As for the long straight cord, I simply braid it. This way if I need it longer I can unbraid some of it. Here is an old pic.

I'm quite certain the Premium headband is not real leather. In fact, the surface on mine is starting to wear off just a little bit. It's definitely not pleather because it isn't cracking, but it's still wearing differently from actual leather. It kind of bunches up around the sides, and a few pieces of the bottom surface seem to have rubbed off, revealing a sort of smooth, matte black texture underneath. Unfortunately, the bunching on the sides looks quite nasty, even though it hasn't affected the comfort in the least.

I've read about the Premium DTxx0 headband having a weird reaction of some kind, where it leaves behind deposits of sticky black goop. Beyer guru Zombie_X seems to think this is some kind of vinyl covering. This effect is pretty rare, though, and that's definitely not what's happening to mine. Still, yet more evidence that we're looking at some kind of synthetic material for the headband.

Yeath the headband is what beyer call "leatherette" , not real leather , if you look at the "manufaktur" customisable beyers , you have the option beetween "leatherette" , free of charge , and leather wich is charged for 15€/22$ , the leather headband is also purchasable as spare .
