All of this represents a ridiculous amount of time, effort, and expense to spend on what most people consider a headphone past its prime...
I don't agree there. The DT880 is still, in 2014, one of the best headphones in its price range, which happens to be a price that is as high as many people are willing to pay for headphones. So if one variety of DT880 is the "best", it's worth knowing which one. On the other hand, if the one which tends to sell for less is just as great sounding and a better match for the amps that most folks are using, that's worth knowing too.
2- People continue to promote the myth that the 600 ohm version is objectively superior in some way despite no real evidence to support that and plenty of evidence to refute it
That is the bottom line IMO.
