The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Had decided to join the club. I'be been using DT880 for a while ... These seem to give me the best All-In-One package so far... Had used previously Sennheiser HD600, DT990's, W1000X, Shure 880 ... Had tried all bayer phones, including T1.. The funny thing is, DT880's tend to give me the most enjoyable performance, especially for the money. Even those mighty Teslas had left me wander their revolutionary tech, considering how small had they grew up compared to DT880's.

As you may see, I own an NFB11 DAC/AMP but still prefere tubes in my chain. But DT880's  sound great with good SS amps too. Unfortunately, NFB11/12 isn't the amp I would call "good" , "ok" is a more appropriate definition.. It gives the needed power, but not the quality it get from LittleDot MKIII though..

If I recall correctly, the 880's sounded fine out of the NFB-12 because they're already a detailed headphone and some degree of blending/rounding wasn't that noticeable compared to the HD650 which already isn't as detailed.

Thanks! I'll post my impressions of the DT880 + NFB12 tomorrow when my DT880-600s arrive!

Oh did I mention I bought them? :)

Hmmm... well they've arrived and I think I'm going to give them some time to burn in or something. First impressions: Sound quality is inferior across the spectrum to both the HD650 and SRH940. :/

On the "bright" side, I don't think they're overly harsh or bright :D

Also believe it or not, they're too small for my head. Not as severe as the SRH940, but the earcups don't fit my ears right and the headband doesn't extend nearly long enough.

They have a huge burn-in difference.  When I first got them, they were a bit shrill, but now they're dead-neutral and have quite punchy, controlled bass.  I'd say detail retrieval is actually ever so slightly better than the 940.
The 10SE might just have awful synergy with the 880.  It happens!

In my opinion, they are in the same class as the 650 (and I even think they improve increasingly with amp quality like the 650), but they're way more "dead."  There's not much fun or intrigue in the DT880/600.  They put the sound into your ears exactly as it is.  As an engineer, I absolutely adore this about them, but I won't pretend they make good listening headphones for the majority of music.  It definitely seems like a niche product to me.  It seems like it's for people who want the utmost in reproduction, even at the detriment of enjoyment.

After two hours of non-listening burn in (meaning I'm not listening to them during the burn in to eliminate psychological burn-in) I'm actually starting to notice quality improvements. Also I'm REALLY liking the neutrality of these. I don't think I've ever heard something this flat except for maybe HD800s sortof.

I will reserve judgement until it burns in for quite some time, and I'll then carefully analyze it.

With my system they are definitvely bright , more than my K702 , not a problem for me at all i am more on the bright side ... not very found of HD650
tongue_smile.gif
etc Out of the box they sounded great , but not better or worse than my fully burned K702 (+900h) . 150 hours this statement didn't change and will not change i never really payed attention to burning , just put them on my head on listen . Confort speacking hum my K702 is better on my head , earcup on DT-880 are ok but not as confy as My K702 .

You will see if burning help but if after proper burning you still found that they are inferior technicaly to SRH940 or HD650 hum , i think that your NFB-12 is not enough for them .

Edit : hum burning seams to work for you ^^ , let's see what happen later :p .

Neutrality hum ... in comparaison to my K702 : highs are more promeniment , a bit less mediums presence (but K702 mids have a touch of warm ) , and bass impact is about the same a tad more fo the DT-880 , soudstage K702 is a bit more wide , and more right/left oriented etc .

ac500 got a NFB-12 not a NFB-10SE wich seams work well with DT-880-600 ohms balanced at least (see NFB-10 topic)

DT-880 a niche product ? many love listening music through them , even if they are not sound engineer or whatever , i really enjoy listening music from my DT-880 or K702 .

If you want a niche product from beyer you should look at DT-48

The NFB12 drives them to very loud levels, although the DT880s are definitely quieter than HD650s. Some songs that are quiet already go up to loud levels but not painful levels like my HD650s can, but it seems powerful enough. I'll continue burning in and see what happens.
