I was surprised as I thought Markl mod addressed the sucked out mids issue.

David, give me a call. I could lend you another amp to do your comparisons with.

Yes, David, this is the review we have all been waiting for. If mountain biker has another amp to do an ever more thorough review, why not? Sorry to say this, but even if the HD800 is comparable to the R10, it just kills me that the HD800 isn't built like the R10. The R10 is the Rolls Royce of headphones. The HD800 is the...

Hi guys, still a noob around here. I've yet to hear an R10 but one of the more talked about merits of the R10 is its superior resolution and portrayal of realism to vocals. Would you guys say that the R10 still outshines that particular aspect in comparison to the HD800?

Regards

With HD800 in hand, I can say that it doesn't look as bad as it does in photos.

I still don't like its styling, but that's just me.

(It's not as big in person as it looks in photos, either!)

No, you're not crazy. I heard the LA7000 at CanJam and well, "if you don't have anything nice to say, you probably shouldn't say it." They just weren't for me at all (but I respect the work that Mark puts into them and they certainly are beautiful headphones). I thought the Markl mod (sans earpad mod) to the D5K is much superior to the LA7000. I also feel my mod improves on the Markl mod greatly but still they are no competition for the HD800. I will continue to work on the mod and get them as close to a little brother as possible, but the Fostex driver in the Denons can't hold a candle to the HD800 transducer. Sennheiser truly did their homework. But the stock cable can be improved and I also feel Sennheiser should offer an XLR-terminated version.

You don't get an ounce of fatigue from the 800s at all. And unlike most headphones, they actually stay in place on your head, and are still comfortable!! They keep putting a bigger smile on my face with every passing minute. (It's okay, you can say I'm over-dramatic.

I have put on my flame proof suit!

I am one of those very few that prefers the MarkL Modded w/ a pari of V4 Bubinga Cups D2000 or D5000 to the R10. The sources and amps used ranged from Accuphase, Luxman P1, and Blue Circle. BTW, IMO the mids on the modded Denons is fantastic. So call me weird but I prefer the Denons.

So far, driving the R10 correctly is a piece of cake compared to driving the HD800. Tonal balance of the HD800 is much closer to the Qualia 010 than the R10. I don't really have a good handle on how good the HD800 can sound in an optimized rig, but I'm damn sure that it won't deliver anything close to top performance randomly thrown into a rig, unless it's by sheer blind luck.

I am really looking forward to this review as well. I have heard the R10's about a dozen times, and for several long sessions, so I have at least a good frame of reference for what they are like (I've only heard the bass-heavy ones). If the HD800's are really, truly, and honestly that good, the maybe I will have to jump in after all.

I am looking forward to the review as blubliss's SDS-XLR/R10 setup was possibly my favorite setup at CanJam (and I am really really enjoying my HD800's everyday)!

Andy: Is your R10 the bass light or bass heavy?

David: I am really sorry to hear about your Singlepower situation!

Thanks for doing a full-blown review David.

I've heard both at the same Detroit mini meet, and I preferred the HD800. That's probably not going to tell anyone very much, however, as I'm just not that wowed by the R-10's.

Looking forward to more...

And given that you had to ask shows that the term "bass-heavy" is really quite relative.

David, I hope you will take Aaron up on his offer of another amp. Although I am sure you have a good handle on the sound of the PRII, I think that using it for a detailed review of these top-tier cans will undercut your findings inherently. That's OK, but maybe your time would be more worthwhile doing a comparison with a better amp driving them.

As for your future balanced amp considerations, please include the TTVJ 307A, the Eddie Current Balancing Act, and maybe even the new Woo Audio 22. The B52 is a fine amp, but for the same or less money, I think any of these will sound closer to the SinglePower sound you sought.
