Erm, ok. I guess technically these are recordings, though they were never intended to be played back.

imagine if someone works out a better way to read these and convert it to audio

The problem seems to be that the machine didn't work very well, more than anything else.

Whether or not edison was aware of this invention is debatable.

The fact that edison created the first mechanism for the reproduction of audio isn't.

Edison became famous by slapping his name on the hard work of others. I'm glad M. Martinville has finally got his due.

Dude, that is a pure analog recording. It does not get any better than that. There's no electrical distortion, ground loops, solid state harshness, cheap power cords, non-audiophile grade fuses, or any of that stuff to get between you and the music.

The only reason this doesn't sound good to you is because you're so used to the artificial modern sound that you haven't developed an ear for raw analog.
