Sorry for OTT sarcasm, but could we hear some constructive comparos with the above phones? Appreciation threads dont HAVE to become FOTM fodder...

Cheers!

I hear you. I have the ES3X and although it has a wonderful detailed sound, there is no way I would get rid of my Stax system. 2 different beasts for different situations. I find the JH13 interesting but won't get them until I get a better Stax system but may be one the ES3X lifespan is over I will get either the Westone ES777X or the JH777, both with hundreds of nano-drivers!

Seriously though, I am happy to see so many satisfied JHA customers. It means this is a great product.

I don't think anyone is saying that. For those who have any of those cans, it seems that they prefer to listen to the JH-13s right now. That's natural since they not only sound great, but they're also new.

All of those headphones are excellent and definitely have their place. It's just that they now need to make room for the JH-13s.

I've heard all of those headphones, except for the HD800. IMHO, the JH-13s don't compare to what I remember hearing from the Stax, R10s and HE90s. That's just from memory though, so those who actually own both will be better off making a comparison. But the JH-13s are far cheaper and more convenient, and still sound fabulous.

edit- my source for the JH-13s is far from top notch. Just straight out of my Zune. So take that for what it's worth.

A question for custom IEM owners (not just JH)
Do they put pressure on your ears like the shure black foams do? I have very small ear canals and I have tried almost every tip out there. My small shure foams start to hurt my ears after 45 min. Would customs not do this since they don't expand inside your ears.

I also use etymotic (baby blues) ear plugs and they also start to hurt after 1 hr.

question #2.
Do you find that the IEM's really need an amp. I did a comparison last night (i blindfolded myself) and had my buddy swap me from Ipod 3.5 to amp(volume set the same) and could not tell a difference between amped or 3.5. (headsix and all wav on ipod). It's night and day with full cans, but I can't tell with IEM's.

1. They put light pressure spread out over a larger surface area, so more comfortable than the shure foams or other universal tips.

2. If your source has a good headphone out you don't always need an amp, but sometimes the amp gives you the best sound like with older ipods, because these custom IEM are so revealing that you hear all the flaws in a poor source or headphone out. I could listen to my iPhone 3G and 3GS headphone out all day and be happy with my custom IEM, but my 4G Nano and 2G Touch would drive me nuts. I'd almost rather listen to my 5.5G ipod video headphone out than those two.

Thanks, my Ipod is a 5.5 that was Rockboxed.

I actually did try the JH13Pro and ES3X via the 5.5G ipod video headphone out, and it wasn't bad at all. Then I switched to the Vcap via LOD with RSA P-51 Mustang and it was goose-bump time.

Interesting, I didn't expect that the iPod touch 2G would sound that much worse than an iPhone 3G/3GS considering how similar all three hardware devices are.

I know, yet it is brighter and thinner sounding than the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and more forward as well - similar to the 4G Nano, while my 3G Nano sounded a little better from memory.

X2 on that thought process

Just loose very early impressions:

I'm lucky. The fit is excellent, and they're extremely comfortable. I'm really not much into having things stuffed in my ears at all, but I've had them in my ears since 3:30 today, and am only now starting to feel a little claustrophobic.

I was a bit of a pita re color and art. I wanted a very pale rose (NOT pink) with the M&P toting kitty in my avatar. It came out exactly as I'd hoped. There are a few very small bubbles in the right earpiece, but so minor as to not bother me one bit, and the left one is perfect. I was a bit worried about both color and art, and Adam nailed it.

I've been just messing around, listening to a little bit of everything all for fun, and not listening critically at all. Live shows sound like live shows. Studio recordings sound as they are. Love the sense of space and instrument placement. Yes, you do get a sense of soundstage. Detail is superb, but not at the expense of body. Tone is dead-on, as far as what I'm picking up on this early. Drums and bass don't get muddied up together. Real decay (wasn't expecting that). Etc. Very loose first-shot things I'm noticing with either a old nano (don't even know what generation, but at least two or three more have come out since) and no amp, or a pico and my laptop.

I did have my first OMG moment, with the first track on Gilad Atzman's Exile where it starts in with the low bowed bass, and then Reem Kalani's powerful voice just knocks a hole in the middle of your chest. Had a very visceral, powerful reaction, almost like one of those horrible adrenaline rush-and-drops that happens right after avoiding an accident at 80 miles an hour. It wasn't pleasant, but the song wasn't meant to be pleasant. Very cool these little iems just put it right there.

I'm very very happy.

Well my set just came in. After a little scrounging around to figure out the fit of my first set of customs, I started up some music. They are definitely a tad less bright than I recall the universal version at CanJam sounding.

They definitely have produce a very large, full sound, that leaves you feeling that you aren't missing anything. There is most definitely a soundstage, and they do not have the inside-the-head feeling of some IEM's. In fact they sound less closed in than most Grados.

Tonally, they are exactly what I was expecting, very clear and even-handed, with plenty of detail, but no trace of brightness or sibilance. The transient response is still crazy-fast, and the sense of impact is great as well. All in all, the feeling I get listening to them is that I am at the mixing board in the studio listening to top-notch monitors while the band does their thing.

god, i hate waiting. i keep getting small updates from a few places, but this thread is killing me. i noted before that Soundcat who took my impressions and sent them said that the same week, they got 10 orders for JH13pro, but a couple people got cold feet and it was reduced to 8.

however, that is only one store in seoul korea where they admitted, koreans are not as into customs as japanese and americans are. 8 people in that environment and in one week is amazing. the same week, 3 sensaphonics orders came in also - quite amazing if you ask me. sensaphonics are not on the radar of anything but musicians and other professionals as far as i can tell - seoul, for being shy on customs is the happening place!

A few of my must listen to songs to hear these things really shine:

Morph the Cat: Donald Fagan, Morph the Cat

Montuno: Gloria Estefan, Mi Tierra (in fact, just listen to the whole album. It's stunning)

Chameleon: Brian Bromberg, Downright Upright

Gaslishting Abby: Steely Dan, Two Against Nature
