Will a tube amp work with Denon D2000s?

I believe that is the case, although I have not heard the 2005 DT770/Pro myself.

I think you have to try it out. I found my tube amp drives 48ohm 100db sensitivity ath w100 better than the 62ohm 105db K701.

The K 701 has a very poor sensitivity of 93 dB/mW. The value of 105 is dB/V, very uncommon nowadays.

Big confusion by a slight mistake of AKG.

This is great - thanks for the help, guys.

I'm surprised to hear that the D2000s wouldn't be much of an upgrade from my DT770s.

There are several posts around here stating that the D2000s are "in another league entirely" from the 770s, basically saying they kick the 770s' ass. And there is a significant price difference. But they wouldn't be much of a 'step up,' eh.... hmm. Guess I'll have to keep looking.

Re. my Little Dot MKIII - it does have a setting for 30 ohm cans, but not 25, which the 2000s are.

Re. the 650s - I do need a closed pair, as most/all of my listening takes place in bed while my wife sleeps.

I love the Beyer sound and really dig powerful bass in a set of cans... there just doesn't seem to be a Beyer-produced next-step from the 770s, that isn't something quite different (880, 990, etc). And I'm not really into getting any Darth mods.

Maybe I'm better off waiting until I can pick up a set of D5000s? Although, they're low-impedance too.... argh.

All I want is a set of cans that'll be a definite next-level from the 770s, that will gel well with tube amps, are closed, and have slamming, powerful bass (ie. a "770 deluxe" LOL)

Anyways, thanks again for all the helpful input. Much appreciated!

I have heard both versions of the DT770 and a Headphile V2 Darth Beyer. I personally prefer the sound from the Denon D2000 or D5000, however mine have the MarkL mods and a pair of his V4 Bubinga wood cups. IMO the difference is huge from stock and also much more involving/rewarding than the DT770.

The best thing for you is to try them out, we can give an opinion but your very own ears should make the decision.

Yeah, they sound right up my alley. I''m drooling just looking at the pics and reading the descriptions. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

Will be a little time before I can do it, though.

(There's actually a used pair the the FS forum right now... but I think if I'm gonna go big here, I'm gonna want a brand-new, absolutely mint pair.)

Looking around at what is sell-able around the house...

The Little Dot MKIII and Denon D2000\D7000 sound great in my setup. I did notice some sibilance when using the Russian Voshod tubes, though. It completely went away when I swapped to the Mullards.

Granted, I haven't heard the Denons on a "good" solid state amp or even the more expensive Woo amps, but there are no sonic deficiencies to my ears. Bass has a firm, tight grip, male and female vocals have fullness and palpability, cymbals are very realistic.

I've had excellent success driving the D2000 with the hybrid Bada H-12, but a terrible time with the Darkvoice 337. Even the modest SS Meier [AK]Zip HA-1, MK.II does a better job than the DV337, IMHE.

I have a D2000 with the LD MK III and it is very good. No problem here. Just don't set it to High Gain, except if you like the knob to always be between 0 and 10 !
