Hey all. Newb here, whats the best headphone, or headphone/amp combo for Trance/hard techno? Looking at the Beyer DT880s.. but can't make up my mind. Help please! Looking to spend around $250 max on headphone and as little as possible on a good amp.
Thanks!

I'd say for hard music, go for the Beyer DT770, the DT880 is good for female vocal trance however, but I'd overall say the DT770 is more involving for most trance, techno and hard dance due to its slamming bass and aggressive (but good) sound, these are definetly not laid back. In fact I am listening to trance right now on the DT770's, and I believe I enjoy them for this music better than the DT880.

The bass on a well amped DT770 must be heard to be believed, very visceral, deep and considering how bloated it is, well defined and agile too.

I have heard quite a lot of low - medium priced headphones, and the DT770 beats them all in one way or another, for dance and rock music.

A very exciting sound, and very comfortable to boot...

The DT770 are excellent for trance. When paired up with a good amp, they will make you think "this can't be happening, how can something sound this good". Their bass will make your head shake, good bass that is.

Im also a big trance fan, would you guys have any recommendations for a cheaper solution? IE, Sony V6 etc....

Also, what kind of amp are you guys using to power the DT770s? Would a Creek OBH-11 be enough to power it? Cuz I wouldn't mind the DT770s for Trance/Gaming.

I would go for the V6/7506 Sony.

I am using a Rotel RA-01 integrated amplifier to power the 770's. I have also used a Corda HA-1. I prefer the Rotel. YMMV... Never heard the Creek...

Thanks alot for all the help guys. Sounds like it's gonna be the 770. Unfortunately I live in Hawaii, and there isn't a store on the island that sells hi-fi stuff, so I won't be able to audition one

but the words of you headphone supremuses is enough to convince me

uhm, don't assume the words headphonus supremus means they know what they're talking about..... have we all forgotten the lessons merton has taught us?

i guess dt770s are decent for trance and mainstream rap, but not much else. If you're a two-genre guy, then go ahead and buy them.

I listen to more trance than any other type music and the DT770's are not near as good as the CD-3000, DT-880, RS-1's, MS2's, or HD600/cardas for trance or any other kind of music. You can pick up a pr. of DT-880's used in your price(or new) and a Rega ear has more than enough power to drive them. You can find some CD-3000 used pretty often in the 300.00 range and they will sound good with a Meta or right from a pcdp. There are always HD600's for 200.00 or less for sale, and you can upgrade the cable later on. The MS2's are 300.00 new. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I find the DT770's are great for electronica and music of all kinds. They are cheap, ultra comfy, have good impact, deep bass, and the closed design helps attenuate ambient noise. Some know-it-alls may tell you its "only good for trance and rap" but don't sweat it. An enjoyable headphone with character. One of the few that I've kept and use on a regular basis.

I aint heard most of those, but I'd have to say I do disagree with saying the 880's are better, and I would likely say the same about the others too, the 880's sure are more intimate, and have a sexier sound that does suit some music, but most trance needs hard hitting bass, and the 770's really kick arse here. Try listening to Lab 4, Prodigy, Marco V, Armin Van B, Jimmy Van M, Mauro Picotto etc and the 770's and compare them to other softer headphones, and I'd bet the 770's would be more enjoyable. The RS-1 and CD3k would probably come closest, but IMO even they would have their work cut out for techno in comparison, and lets not forget they are up to 6 times the price!

Seriously though, the 770's out of the headphones I've heard, for most dance and techno are WAY, WAY out ahead of the others...
