MSN article: Why Skullcandy Is SO Hot

Any business that makes as much profit as skullcandy is hot in my book.

And I love the irony in this ad...

I think more higher end manufacturers could take a note or two on the design. Yeah, I know young people won't buy $400 headphones. But there's no reason why Sennheiser couldn't "style the hell out" of their low end headphones.

I wouldn't pay much for a pair of low-end senns with pink fuzz(lowers the retail value in my mind), but with a nice spacy airbrushed design on the headband? Sure! Heck, I'm sure I could come up with a nice graphic design on the band.... which I think I'll get started on... hmm.

You gave me ideas. I work in a sign shop that can make decals. Let me see what I can come up with.

Ok, how many Skullcandy users are head-fi regulars? There's market for decent sounding, nice looking phones that nobody is really exploring.

I mean charge $5-10 more for a "special edition" of Senn 280 or something. People paid money for sillier things(remember U2 special edition iPod? If I want a U2 Ipod, I want the War album colours on them, not that album from a couple years ago)

But I'm a young person that buys expensive headphones

But I do agree that other companies could easily create better styles to suit the teenage market. Something bright and colourful

Heh, more specifically, alot of headphones - especially portables, if duked out to look along with modern trends (easy to do with some like AT portables), they would sell alot faster, generating profit even without the premium for style. But ya, there is noone who bothers competing with Skullcandy in marketing - probably excess effort.

Skullcandy caters to those that don't value money, throw their junk around and lose it every couple of weeks hence the "repeat customers." I don't blame them, though. My gf loses her things every month or so and that's why she never buys nice things. I buy my $400-500 hp and sunglasses b/c I keep them in good condition for a really long time. It's all relative, IMO.

My brother, who's still young at heart, had some of their iems. Pure Garbage!

IMO, a company designing and marketing trendy products for a target audience as impressionable and undiscerning as a bunch of teenage skaters, is just lucky, not hot. It was only a matter of time before someone tripped over that cash cow.

Stark Industries; now that's hot...
