I also have an open pair and a closed pair that I frequently swap between. I would prefer to settle on just one pair, but so far I cannot decide because each have their advantages and disadvantages. I would love to find phones that offer "the best of both worlds", but so far I have not.

I may also add, closed headphones always have more intimacy than open headphones. If you want to find the best intimacy for vocals, you should look towards a closed headphone which emphasizes the mids.

I have never heard an open headphone reproduce the intimacy of a good closed headphone.

Sure open headphones have advantage in soundstage, but they lose intimacy which to me is more important for my preferences

What is meant by "Cavern effect?"

Probably echoing caused by bouncing sounds in the closed type.

As for me, I own a pair of HD598. I like it because it's not "banging" to my head like some previous closed headphones that I tried. It feels like it relieves the pressure caused by closed types. But to be honest, sometimes I miss those bass........
