IE 8 mod
Mar 31, 2009 at 1:57 AM Post #16 of 20
Why can't I get this to work? Am I using the right sizes? I am using the large silicon IE8 tips and the small Shure olives.

The stem of the IE8 tips is bigger than the olive opening (yes I took the core out), so I have to kind of fold the IE8 tips to slide them in the olive opening. Does that sound familiar to you guys?

Someone mentioned to push the IE8 stem past the olive opening, but once I get that to happen, everything is all folded up...

I'd like to hear what this is all about. Give me some tips pleeeassse

EDIT: Nevermind...got it

Try putting the shure foam onto the IE8 first, push it right down to the bottom so it is kind of scrunched up. Then put the MEDIUM sennheiser single flange onto the IE8 as normal, but with the main flange part which goes into your ear inside out. Then pull the foam up a bit and into shape again, then flip the silicone flange over it. That works for me, I think others use different techniques, trust me, you'll get it to fit one way or another.

Man, I used my IE8's for all of 10 minutes before they broke on me. It was horrifying to feel the nozzle give way. I think this has happend to others, and word on if there is an easy fix. Can i just epoxy it back together?

Where did you guys get these sony hybrid sleeves. I just got a pair of IE8's and ended up breaking the nozzle when I tried putting my shure olives on them

Luckily NCIX exchanged them for me so I'm waiting for my new pair to come in.
Also any advice on how to properly de-core the shure olives. I seem to have got it done, but it didn't come out very cleanly.

Originally what I did was (core intact) used a pair, actually 2 pairs of pliers to stretch the shure olives out and then popped the IE8's right in. Worked fantastically on the left side but the right side went too far up.
In both cases, it was impossible to remove the olives once they were on the headphones without cutting them.

I'm keeping this thread zero'd in. I REALLY REALLY want to get these things working.

Suprisingly on my first listen, I didn't find them much better than the Etymotic ER6i's. Of course the bass was richer, but everything else sounded muted because of it.

Any thoughts guys?

I'll definitely give one of these multiple tip solutions a try when I get the headphones back.

these are dynamic drivers. they require burn in. just let your music play continuously on them for maybe 25 hours or so, then listen to them again. however, that will not be enough. probably need around 400 hours to feel secure... i'm getting my ie8s soon too ^^. love the sennheiser sound

Thanks for the detailed instructions mate, I'm totally loving this mod right now. Isolation and comfort is improved a good deal, and I think I like the sound better.

I used decored medium Shure olives and the stock Senn single flange medium silicone tips. There's a little bit of foam sticking out though from the outer edges of the silicone tip though, so I'll prolly try this with small olives.
