I like songbird for a music jukebox player. I know there is the Linux version. It is also on windows and MAC OSX. Plays flac files and much better than itunes. VLC is always good too for any type of video.

Is there any software you're looking for in particular?

Sonata + MPD is my favorite choice for music player, or Amarok if you use KDE. There are more functional frontends to MPD out there, but I like Sonata for its simplicity. Nothing to replace foobar2000 though

SMplayer for videos, no question about it.

urxvt is my favorite terminal emulator.

If you enjoy Linux and start getting really into it, definitely give Arch a look. It's a very minimal distro, you build your system up from scratch. You also learn a ton in the process.

At the moment I am only using the laptop as an internet/email device, little more than a netbook.

I was just looking for general recommendations for good software that other people had been using and enjoying. Next year when I get a work laptop for my new job, that will provide me with a windows machine (for when using such things becomes unavoidable) and I can move this one over entirely, rather than dual booting.

For some unexplainable reason, I'm in the middle of backing up my Vista before wiping the drive and making it exclusively Ubuntu. Maybe I am hoping it will help me kick the habit of playing computer games instead of working.

(By the way, I still find these Mac keyboards frustrating as hell to type on.)

how about something like Kismet, it's very useful when you're out and about and want to find a WiFi connection.
