I have owned a set of shure e3c's for a while now and ive been very impressed. I had been using them with my 60gig ipod video until i lost it, so i bought a zune. So far ive liked the zune a little bit more than the ipod, but after finding the ipod and testing the sound quality with the zune, i am not impressed at all. The equalizer on the ipod really brings out the bass on the e3cs and helps make the music more full bodied. my question is whether an amp can be used or something else done to make the zune beef up the sound. I dont want to use the ipod again as it is not large enough ( 60 gigs vs. the 120 zune) and i really dont want to sell both and get a new 120gig ipod.

any suggestions?

Get the FiiO E5 for about $20. It will introduce the Shure E3C's to some nice BASS. I tried it with my SE530s and it really just ruins the sound since the SE530s has enough BASS without EQ,

what zune dont have an EQ, thats crazy. Which players dont have an EQ right now anyway? even the shuffle can have EQ preset applied to each song in itunes.

The newer Zune's don't have a EQ because....well It doesn't need it. The sound output of the Zune is very natural and flat. There is no emphasis on any frequency. If you feel the Zune's sound is lacking in a particular frequency then it's either you love that frequency a bit too much or your earphone's are lacking. I love the sound of my Shure SE530's out of the Zune 120 and wouldn't change a thing. I got the FiiO E5 and tried the bass boost and after awhile realized how unnatural and muddy everything sounded since the SE530's don't need additional BASS. As soon as I clicked off the bass boost I was greeted with a balanced, crystal clear sound that sounded amazing.

i suppose thats a good idea to train people about headphones and good sound when uneq which does make everything sound clearer, but then again u need headphones / amp.. so extra cost down the road.

The Zune30 is the only model to have an EQ.

And the others that have alread said this are correct, the new Zunes don't really need an EQ.

However, if you are looking to punch up the bass with a portable amp then I do recommend the two in my sig, with the edge going to the Decware.

thanks for the advice. im going to try the e5, looks like it will do what i want cheaply and compact too. i understand that the flat sound from the zune is "better," but i cant turn it up loud otherwise the high pitched sound hurts my ears.
