Dear all,

First time poster, frequent haunter. I've recently made the leap from Fontopia earbuds to q-Jays. You can imagine my thrill.

I am seeking to buy a pair of earphones for two of my dear friends for their birthdays, because they are still living in the medieval ages of iPod earbuds and laptop speakers. One friend (call him Friend A) listens mostly to hip-hop, R&B and soft rock; I bet he wants earphones with some kickin' bass and smooth mid's. He's got smallish ears, though.

The other friend (call him B) listens to all sorts of genres, from ambient (think Mirror's Edge soundtrack), to African tribal music he picked up in Nigeria (badass). He also, as I've noticed, likes to point out details in his songs, like soft strum lines and underlying beats. He has biggish ears, and is currently using laptop speakers. He deserves better, I think.

My budget is $180 total, stretching to $200 if need be. What earphones do you excellent audiophiles suggest I buy?

(I know there's a gazillion of these threads, but many of them are old and don't take into consideration new earphones that are just coming out, like the Shure Se115 or the Westone 3's.
But please don't suggest the Westone 3's -- they're a bit too expensive.)

Get them both a pair of Yuin PK3s or PK2s. They are ear buds, but high-quality sound. Can be had at head-direct.com, or headphone.com. Your wallet will thank you, and so will your friends.

for your friend the basshead.. i suggest you get him a futuresonic atrios M5.. the godfather of bass

Hmm for your friend who likes the listen to african music.. HMMMM not too sure about that... maybe a MylarOne Bijou?

Haha all said.. good earphones will only work excellently if your source is good, no use getting such good earphones if all one listens to are 128kbps Mp3 music...

and really good earphones.. if coupled with a good amplifier.. WHOA

Compared to iPod earbuds and budget considered, I bet they'll be smashing ^_^
