I might be a bit thick, but I have searched the forums, and Im still abit confused about the different verions of the beyerdynamic dt770. As far as i understand there is about 8 versions of the dt700.

Pro version (32/80/250/600 ohm) - all theese sound about the same.
Consumer version (same as 2005-version) (32/80/250 ohm), all theese sound about the same, but the standard version has quite abit diffrent sound than the pro version.

MMX300: basically a 32 ohm dt770, with a mic, but what dt770? The pro version or the consumer version?

Have i undertood all the diffrent versions correctly, or have I gotten it all wrong?

Much better to buy a DT770 and then a clip-on mic. You'll save a lot. Anyway, the ohmage is just the impedance and impedance can affect the sound quality. the 32 ohm version is in the MMX300 and is intended for those without headphone amps.

What's your budget?

First of all, thanks for your input.

Yeah, i now it's the impedance, but I get the impression from people that the diffrent impedane -versions are sounding about the same, if thats the case I choose the one best suited for mye use.

The 32 ohm version is in the mmx 300 you say, but wich 32 ohm version? The pro, or the consumer/2005?

I guess I'll save some money, but a extra soundcard is also useful, do you have a mic to recommend?

The reason I ask is that I have heard the Pro/80ohm version, and I am wondering to what extent I can "extrapolate" that listening experience to the other models (not many headphones are available in stores for me to listen to where i live).

I guess my budget is somewhere between 150 and 400 dollars.

Impedance is the load presented to amp by the headphones. It needs to be consistent with the gain of the amp. Low impedance headphones may hiss/distort on high gain amps, and high impedance headphones may require a higher gain amp to make them shine. The impedance may also affect the sound signature of the 'phones. For an example, look at what Etymotic says about the difference between the ER-4P & ER-4S:
Etymotic Research, Inc. - ER-4 - Which ER•4 is Right for You

Thanks for the info, but I am aware of the concept of impedance, I am more interested in the practical diffrences between the dt770 models in soundquality. My impression is that the diffrent impedance versions of the same models are about the same in this regard, is this incorrect? And also i get the impression that there is quite a diffrence between the dt 770 pro and the dt770 standard/2005/premium (wich are all the same?), and the pro-version, is that correct? And then there is the question of wich of theese two models the mmx300 is, the pro, or the standard/2005/premium?

Hi ATWindsor,

First of all the DT 770 PRO and DT 770 (Edition 2005 - Consumer Version) are "related".
The differences are the headbow (more tension on the DT 770 PRO), the housing (causing both headphones to sound slightly different) and the packaging. The different impedances:
- DT 770 PRO in 80 or 250 Ohms (32 and 600 Ohms are special versions and not available for retail)
- DT 770 (Edition 2005) in 32, 80, 250 or 600 Ohms, not all available for normal retail, but all available through our MANUFAKTUR.

The differences in sound between the different impedances is theoretically simple:
Headphone systems or drivers with lower impedances use slightly heavier wire for the coil and are therefor not moving as rapid and exact as the higher impedance systems. Conclusion: lower impedances mean slightly heavier membrane + coil --> slightly more mass --> slightly slower to move causing headphones with higher impedances to sound slightly more detailed.

Concerning the MMX 300, this is actually a seperate product but if you want to relate it to a DT 770, than a DT 770 (Edition 2005).

I hope this removed your question marks?

Thanks and best regards from Germany,

The custom DT770's are:
DT770 Pro 80 ohm
DT770 Pro 250 ohm
DT770 2005 premiumline consumer edition (250 ohm)
DT770 M (80 ohm).

Different ohms can only be purchased at the Beyers webshop as manufaktur on-line custom design.

Edit: Peter was ahead of me :)
BTW: to my ears, there's a huge different in sound between DT770 Pro and DT770 2005 consumer edition.

Thank you for your answers Sundevil and Tiemen, that cleared it up for me, although i seem to be able to buy 32 ohm-versions from stores here. So i will probably go for those, nice to have the oppurtunity to put them on portable equipment.
