I have been looking into the HFI series a lot and have figured out that it is what I want to go with.

Now, I just need to know if there is a major difference between the HFI-580's and 780's (or at least enough of a difference to pay the extra money)

I would be running it through a FiiO E3 or maybe an E5 into an iPod Touch.

Did you find what you needed?

I haven't heard either and I don't know much about how the 580's sound in comparison to the higher end cans. But, I can tell you not to rule out the 680's- it's a more neutral (less bass heavy) version of the 780's.

In my setup, I couldn't imagine why I would want more bass than the 680's give. It's already much more than my Sennheiser HD-595s.

Just buy the more expensive ones, or else you will be wondering, every time you listen to music: did i make the right choice?

This isn't always the case, though. I bought the 680s instead of the 780s because the descriptions of the sound signature appealed much more to me, yet they were cheaper. I would have stuck with that choice even if the 780s were $50 less than what I ended up with.

are you happy with your 680's bass response?

I haven't heard the HFI-780 but I do love my HFI-580. Not many people seem to have much experience with these.

The bass is absolutely fantastic in these cans. Very quick, very punchy. I came from the DT770 Pros which sounded so terrible slow and boomy in comparison.

I bought them originally with the intention of using them for my e-drums but they quickly became my favorite set of music cans. Very musical.

edit: damnit this thread was 2009. I thought it was 2010. My apologies.
