I didn't phrase the title very well, but my question is this:
Does the Music store you go to sell CD's with the CD in the case on the shelves?
Or does it have the CD's behind the counter and place them in the case when you buy the album?

I used to buy CD's from a normal, pretty boring, big store where they stock everything (DVD's, CD's, iPods, other electronics and things), but specialize in nothing. There the CD's were in the case on the shelves.
Recently I found an indepdant store where I live that selve Vinyl and CD's and is a far more enjoyable experience. The storepersons know their stuff, and clearly share the same passion for music as their customers. All round it's way better, except they have the CD's behind the counter, and I'm just wondering if this is normal. I've never had a problem with damaged disks or anything. Would this bother you? I suspect they do it because they can't afford to have product shop lifted. I'll keep shopping there regardless because I like the store, but I was just wondering what others opinion on it is.

In the Netherlands I've never seen a store that does not have the discs behind the counter. Definitely to prevent shoplifting. You can browse the cases that are in the store, bring the one you want to the counter and they'll put the disc in. With special packaging they sometimes put a dummy on the shelves and give you the real one at the counter. Special editions are almost always behind the counter.

With vinyl, it depends. They're not as shoplift sensitive, so you can usually browse the real thing. One store here in Delft is run by a guy who knows everything and he has a few bookcases of 'special' stuff behind the counter, as well as more regular prints on the shelves.

In HMV over here the CDs are in the cases already with a plastic security stickers on the CD case door. I usually open it up to see if the CD is inside before paying for them. Game discs on the other hand are usually left behind the counter as they tend to cost more to replace.

Some smaller (independant) record shops over here (in UK) still have open cover CDs, with the actual CD behind the counter. I like that as it's nice to browse the booklet notes before buying something, particularly with classical CDs.

Cool. It's quite reassuring seeing it's common practice. I'd just never really seen (or maybe I have but never payed attention) until recently when I started expanding my horizons.
The Cases are on the shelves/racks/whatever, with the booklets in them it's just the CD's are behind the counter. All my slight apprehension at this practice has now be absolved though; thank-you.

From your original thread (this one is a duplicated...)

Seems to be a fine mix.
From what I have figured out the have the most selling/newest ones ready behind the counter, by plastic around the case. Then empty cases in the shelves.

While for less selling/older ones they have an example of two in the shelve, with the CD in the case and a security clamp around it.

No worries. I'm seeing double posts/threads all over the place due to overloading the server, but soon that will be fixed when the forums move to a better solution.

No worries!
With the unresponsive forum these days it sure can happen that you double-post.
