HD800 vs AH-D7000
Feb 14, 2009 at 7:54 PM Post #31 of 150
I've been reading good things about the Denon on this board and the $550 price tag for a $999 headphone seemed too good to pass up. I have no doubt that the HD800s will be awesome, but the ultimate question is 'synergy,' and I personally don't think that I have the system that will make me satisfied with them. I purchased the Denons, which are low impedence, so they should work much better out of my EF1.

I decided I'll get the HD800s when I can purchase a rig that can really take advantage of them. No use in holding on to a $1400 headphone in a system that doesn't perform nearly up to standard with them. Plus, I never really like to buy things when they first come out, because you can't see how the product will settle... and who knows, the price of these headphones might actually come down in the future. I can't wait to hear impressions of which system the 800s really have synergy with, etc. I'll have to take all of that into account before I make that purchase.

The thing is, the HD800s aren't going to go nowhere, so there's no real reason to purchase them now unless you want to be 'the new kid on the block' with hottest gear. When I can afford the balancing act amp, I'll pick that up along with a pair of HD800s so that I have something good to feed them with.

Let me know how you like the D7000s when you get them! They sure are beautiful looking headphones.

Many preferred the sound of the denons (2000, 5000, 7000) over the sennheisers (600, 650). Will the new HD800 put sennheiser back on the top over the denons?

Any comments?

Absolutely yes, the 800 is better than the Denon lineup in every regard, bar none. I should know. I've been listening to them at home here for a few weeks now.

I've also been using Senn's matching 2nd generation amp. The dev team doesn't know about it yet, but the marketing division has been working on it for quite a while now. Trust me, you'll want one.

I hope this answers your questions.

Seeing how much better the PRO 900 did over a fully markl modded D5000 I have bigger hopes for the HD 800 than the D7000 really

You've been listening to the HD800 and a matching 2nd generation Sennheiser amplifier for a few weeks now?

Please post some pictures and impressions. I'd really like to hear your feedback on everything.

For those confused by Schweiz's comments, pay more attention to this part:

Pretty obvious that he is being facetious, making fun of the fact that the HD800 isn't even out, yet people are asking for comparisons.

I know that I'd take an amp devised by the marketing division over one made by the engineers every time. Drat those boffins anyway.

Yo... Jude... you've been scooped, man. You didn't even know about the "double-secret" amp!

....

Or did you? Hmmm?

Thank you. I've heard from Tyll that the HD800 trumps the Denon AH-D7000 in every way and now you just confirmed it too. I'm sure more confirmations are to come. Exciting for those who have had the Denon AH-D7000 and sold it to buy the HD800.

Clearly its not so obvious

I'd hope the HD800 is superior to the D7000 ($540) in every way considering you can get it and the RS-1 ($700) for the price of one HD800. I can't wait to hear the HD800s, but I'm perfectly fine waiting a year or two before I make that investment. I think the incoming D7000s will serve me fine as a low cost alternative until then.

^^^The tell-tell is that $999.00 headphones are sold at almost a 50% discount and they just came out.

By what you're saying I could get a K701, RS-1 (can be had at a 30% discount), D7000 and HD 650, and come out better than the HD 800?! Personally, I'd rather not have a specific headphone for each particular genre; that is where I hope the HD 800 separates itself from its competition.

My guess is that the HD 800 will not be the game ender; however, I put money on it, that it's going to be better individually (for me), than all of the above.

And other than time, I have nothing to lose.

The highest price isn't always indicative of the best quality, but considering the fact that you can get two head of the line phones from two different manufacturers, one should reasonably expect that the HD800s would outperform its 'competitors,' especially when you have a history of producing high-quality products.

They'll probably be the closest endgame phones for a lot of people as you can get, but then again, no matter what qualities these headphones will have, there will be others who want a different flavor just due to their personal preference.

I'll pick up a pair of HD800s sooner or later, but I'd rather have equipment more suitable to serving these headphones. Couple that with the awesome discount on the Denons, I just had to put the HD800 purchase on hold for a good bit.

yes you shouldn´t go after price... i payed 450$ for my ultrasone pro 900 and there is as mentioned not a single point where the markl modded d5000 is better if you are focusing on sound quality anyway. They do look fantastic though
smily_headphones1.gif
. I am honestly astounded by the overall praise over the denons with pretty much no negatives named on them... only me and another one that noticed the echo and tons of reverb going on for example
smily_headphones1.gif

you hear bad reports on pretty much every headphone except the denons
