Uhm, not to stomp on this thread....but how do the HD555's sound compared to these?

AD700 is has better detail, clarity, separation, soundstage as well as faster tighter bass. Treble is more pronounced and sparkly on the AD700. Bass volume is louder on the HD555.  Midrange is similar on both in that they both have a upper midrange dip but sounds somewhat clearer on the AD700 (maybe due to the better separation and treble)

I could barely find any specs, short of giving JVC a call and asking them what DAC they used in it, I'm not sure where I could find out what chip they used.

All it says in the book under specifications is:

  1. Output Power
    1. Stereo 100W x 2, 8 ohms, 1kHz (DIN)
    2. Surround Front & Centre Channels 100W x 3, 8 ohms, 1kHz, 0.8% total harmonic distortion
    3. Surround Channels 100W x 2, 8 ohms, 1kHz, 0.8% total harmonic distortion
  2. Total Harmonic Distortion 0.8%* at 100W, 8 ohms, 1kHz
  3. Input (Sensitivity/Impedance): 220mV/47k ohms
  4. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (66 IHF/DIN): 87dB/67dB
  5. Frequency Response: 20Hz - 20kHz (+1dB)
  6. Tone Control
    1. Bass (100Hz) : +10dB
    2. Treble (10kHz) : +10dB

Pronounced indeed, sparkly I'm not sure. Something about the AD700 high's sound artificial to me, can't quite find the word to describe it. It sounds too sharp/splashy to me

I saw it here.

AD700's treble is indeed a bit sparkly.  What you find to be unnatural is the metallic quality of the treble.  Not a badass metallic like SR325is, but the typically sharp and unnatural kind. =(

Just received my pair today and was blown away by how classical sounds on it. They brought a whole new dimension to "new world symphony" by Dvorak, and that was just running off onboard laptop sound. Running them off a x-fi xtreme music in my desktop they sounded even better.

However, black metal sounded relatively disappointing on them. The drums, especially the snare and bass drums just don't have that "kick" to them. I'm hoping burn-in and a DAC/amp will help with this.

I highly recommend something warm and bassy for AD700.

This won't change with burn-in , with an amp or DAC. If you desire those traits above, then Grados will do it. Grados have that punch and snap for drums.

I didn't want to mention that since he already bought it and has it with him, but yeah, you're right.

Alessandro MS1 is the solution there, though AD700 will be the better 'phone for classical.

With either of these, however, his best bet for a synergetic amp/DAC combo is something warm and bassy.

I did extensive research on headphones before my purchase, and I was expecting them to sound a bit disappointing with black metal. Not THIS disappointing, but oh well :p

I'm already thinking of getting a pair of HD555 or HD595 for music, but thanks for recommending Grado, I'll see if I can find a store around Toronto with a demo pair. Do you have any specific recommendations for a warm and bassy dac/amp? Something around $1-200 CAD?

You should ask in the Dedicated Sources forum or the Headphone Amps (full-sized) forum.

I think you'll love the Alessandros better, and they will be okay with small ensemble classical/chamber.

Hi everybody
wink.gif

I have had an AD700 for about a year now and I absolutely love it!

I was wondering if an headphone amp or a DAC would make it sound better?

It's connected directly to the sound output of my mac mini right now...

Thanks

The AD700 sound better than the HD555 for anything imo despite its weaker bass.  MS-1 is the way to go for black metal.  You could also consider the DT440 as well.

DAC yes. Amp no (well not as much of a difference).
