Lets Talk Metal

IMHO Bohren & Der Club Of Gore is something like a fusion of Dark Ambient and doomy Jazz. Their album Black Earth is fantastic piece of moody music, especially songs like Vigilante Crusade.

I bought Helloween - Gambling With A Devil a couple of days ago. Even though I dislike Power Metal, usually, this album is quite good! Thanks for the links earlier in this thread, whoever posted them (I forgot already). Only downside is, HOLY SIBILANCE BATMAN! Easy with that treble knob! This album is unlistenable with HE-5 and annoying with other bright headphones. Wierd thing is that this album isnt particularly compressed nor clipping, tonal balance is just incredibly treble heavy and rather weak low end and almost no midrange. Were their ears full of wax or something when mastering this? You cant hear this from Youtube links, they cut quite a bit of information from the treble region.

And I thought I am used to bright unlistenable recordings!

Nothing alike. Bohren is super slow, super expansive doomjazz. A bit like the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble or the soundtrack to Twin Peaks. Imagine abandoned hotels, dark alleyways and rainy city nights. Ephel Duath is annoying mathcore.

I only know "The Painter's Palette" and yes, the scream-core vocals can get annoying. Other than that I like it, and I can't stand *core.

I can't stand "."core either.  Ephel Duath is jazz, not math imo.  Avant-garde jazz I suppose, as opposed to the lounge jazz style of Bohren.  Some people generally find complicated music annoying, and some of it is too.

Jazz in metal is interesting as it can affect the sound and structure of the music is endless ways.  Usually the influence is small, which works really well for lots of bands.  I really like some bands that use jazz elements, but it can be hard to listen to if it's not done really well.  Bands like Spiral Architect are too technical and clean for my taste.  It's got to have some genuine feel or grit imo, like this band called ZU.  Not exactly metal, more of a sophisticated hardcore sound, but exceptional musicians and definitely out there.  They also write killer grooves.

btw Patton is not in this song, despite the title

Are the Japanese re-masters somehow different than the crap that was shoveled on the rest of the world in '04? I've heard them all, and frankly the only one that's any good is the MFSL version of Countdown To Extinction, largely because the original mix wasn't all that great. The version of Peace Sells you want, at least on CD anyway, is the original Toshiba "Black Triangle" version. It sounds much better than the US first pressing, and it mops the floor with the crappy re-master. I have a UK first press of Rust which sounds excellent, although it's probably identical to the US first press. A new SHM-CD version of the original Black Triangle master and the other original masters would be great, but I haven't heard about anything different being done for Japan.

I don't know the quality of the Japanese re-masters but I'll find out soon when I rip them to my PC and check out the waveforms, as well as listen to them of course. I don't have an original CD of Rust In Peace (I have the "crappy re-master" of that album) but I do have an original of Peace Sells, will definitely compare them at some point.

Oh, you need to get the original Rust. The remix is unfortunately the worst of a bad lot. Dave couldn't find the original vocal tracks for nearly half the songs on Rust, so he just re-recorded the vocals, and I think some of the guitar tracks were replaced as well. It's a mess.

The only song that definitely got butchered in the remasters was Take No Prisoners. I think the differences in the other vocal tracks weren't that big (not many would listen to Megadeth for the vocals anyway) and the changes to the guitars in the remasters are mostly for the better (especially the solo for Holy Wars at a higher pitch). It's hard to say if the remasters is better or worse than the original; both have their good points and weak points.

I guess it depends on the individual. Some people even like them. For me, all it took was one listen to know that I wanted no part of any of them, even So Far So Good So What, which didn't have a great production job the first time around (and wasn't that great of an album either). As far as I'm concerned the Black Triangle version of Peace Sells has no weak points, and the remaster is huge downgrade in every way. I'm not aware of any special Japanese first pressings of Rust, but my UK first press sounds excellent. I don't know if it sounds any different than the US first press (doubt it), but I certainly don't find it lacking at all.

The one album where the I think improvements were actually made was with countdown. The original mix has really heavy bass, sucked out mids, and bright highs. The standard remaster fixes those issues, but its just too damn loud to really enjoy at all. Fortunately the MFSL version pretty much gets it right IMO. Youthanasia is hard to tell apart from the original.

Actually the original Killing was awful in every way with respect to prodcution.  The remaster makes it listenable (at least for me).

Agree about Youth, disagree about Rust.  I thought the remaster wasn't exactly better but I didn't think it was that much worse (its a vocals vs guitars argument for me).

Yeah I always forget about that one. They just had no budget the first time with Killing, so the remaster is absolutely better. I don't know why they bothered with the censored version of These Boots on that album though, especially since a version exists uncensored. Interestingly there is a remastered version of Hidden Treasures, but it was not released in the US because the tracks also appear on Warchest, which is an odd decision. That and the MD45 thing, which was just totally unnecessary.

Man I didn't even know that about Hidden Treasures which is an awesome album IMO.  I 100% agree that the MD45 thing was just plan weird.

man i love when other people start liking a band i discover :D i really need to check out their EP a bit more, i only really listen to Fragments.

it was like 2 months ago when i first put the video's up, but no one checked them out. guess putting them at the top of my years list for metal helped their odds!

Yeah I am sorry Soup's....but kudos to you!

Btw, do you like Periphery?

i do indeed, ive been listening to their self titled cd quite a bit recently. i wasnt a huge fan when i first checked them out like 7 or 8 months ago, but then you posted the video for Icarus lives, and ever since ive liked them. another band you introduced me to( i think it was you) that i really like now is cynic, good stuff

and speaking of allegaeon and Triosphere, which you liked both of, i discovered them both by reading reviews on metalunderground

Metalundergound...DaveBSC gave me metalstorm....I will check out metalunderground...

Very nice. Thanks for posting that. This stuff is the future of metal.  It's slick and shows good depth for a young looking band.  These guys have great potential if they don't get ruined by the business/turn into posers and can push the envelope a bit harder.
