Lets Talk Metal

Sorry about that Redcar, yes I should have read more carefully. I'm an unabashed Priest fan. I've  never actually listened to Nostradamus after the reviews at the time. I thought Redeemer of Souls was decent.

I used to have this compilation-Hero, Hero back in the day. It was Rocka Rolla and most of Sad Wings-but  I should picked up Sad Wings digitally at some point. And probably Stained Glass.

I bought their Metology anthology a few years ago which is pretty extensive.

Sin After Sin was the first Priest I bought which I never actually loved. But, I spent a lot of time with British Steel, Unleashed in the East (Green Manalishi and Diamonds and Rust baby!), Screaming for Vengence. But, I probably logged in more hours with Defenders of the Faith than anything else. Those four are my favorite.  I think I was losing interest to newer metal by the time Pain Killer came out-it seemed silly to me at the time-but a classic album too.

It is actually called Stained Class.

But don't know if you remember Priest Live!

It was recored in 1986 and came out as a laser disk, a two double album, CD and cassette plus VHS. The show included with Turbo 30 was recorded in 86 too but sounds even better to me?

But they have put out a lot of live stuff.

Touch of Evil came out after Angel Of Retribution. I still think they sound best on this Turbo 30 set?

It's safe to say Nostadamus was a failure too for them. I paid $100 for my box set and now they sell for $30 or less. But I really think Nostradamus is amazing.

Priest have always been about new sounds. Listening to British Steel in the late 1970s was like audiophile metal. No one did what they did with studio effects in metal. I still think Nostradamus is a continuation of that innovation. But yes, many of my friends hate the album.

For me I just seem to like everything now days. If you listen to Locked In or Out In The Cold, I bet you'll like those songs now. They play those and Turbo Lover live most of the time. Painkiller was an album I too was not into when it came out. Still the stuff they put out when Halford was not the vocalist seems to be the darkest era?

Speaking of Halford there is a tape out there when Halford sang for Sabbath when they needed a vocalist in a jam. I'm just curious to hear that one. I'll find it some day.

Do you remember giving me some death metal suggestions last year? I think you recommended Bloodbath's Resurrection Through Carnage. I just got around to listening to it. Good stuff! If there was an award for most easily understood DM vocals it might be a tie between Akerfeldt and Mikael stanne. Great OSDM recommendation.

That's fantastic, glad to hear! Akerfeldt absolutely is one of my favorite DM vocalists, it's a shame he wastes so much time with that Opeth project....

I think when I first got that album (as a bonus from a record label) I didn't realize who the vocalist was...and then was like, "That's him? Daaaamn!" I like the sick guitar tone on that album too.

Yeah that classic BOSS HM-2 (and maybe HM-3 on some albums) into a cranked tube amp tone is one of my favorite sounds in metal. Doesn't work for every band but it works perfectly for Bloodbath.

Hard to believe that "Sad Wings Of Destiny" was recorded on a shoe-sting before Priest were even known or famous!

It's also a very much crossover song where it's progressive metal but the lyrics (about a woman he loves drinking) are very much "the Blues" style of theme, perfectly showing how metal evolved from the Blues in ways.

Wow, what a show. They were in top form.

Priest and Scorpions stole the show that epic, long ass,hot as hell day/night...they had water cannons that they would shoot the crowd with to cool us down, however the ground got really muddy, and then when night time came it dropped to the 40s and we were all freezing and rolling in mud....not fun!

Quiet Riot-missed them
Motley Crue-they sucked so bad...Vince sounded like crap,as usual.
Ozzy was kinda sloppy...I think it was Jake E Lee's first show(dont quote me on that)
Triumph-wasnt familair with too much of their material, and frankly didnt really fit in with the rest of ther bands on the bill
Priest-awesome
Scorpions-awesome
Van Headache-Diamond Dave was so drunk by the time they hit the stage....very disappointed.

There mightve been other bands there but thats all I can recall

Holy hell man...those lasers mustve been insane to see live!!!

Here is what The Scorps sounded like that night. By the time they hit the stage the sun had set and temps were getting cooler,so they had more energy than the bands, like Priest who had to contend with the heat...also they had the advantage of a proper lightshow(not like your BOC) but lighting always helps!
