I didn't mean that they sound like Gorgoroth; just that I frequently listened to early Gorgoroth and those two Dark Funeral albums around the same time in my life, so it's nostalgic. Today I actually listened to a track from Incipit Satan.

I agree, I also picked up the CDs from the same time with both bands, still I was into Dark Funeral before Gorgoroth. Gorgoroth became 10x more famous later?

They do dress the same?

Which is which? No one is original now are they?

That's funny, because I'm a long-time Arcturus fan and don't even like Arcturian. But what's this about "other three albums"? They have five full-length studio albums and other releases as well.

I also like The Kovenant! They kept talking about a new album, for many years, but I still see nothing. And they are another band with more albums than you mentioned.

Thanks for the links, I was only looking at the full length studio albums, so missed some of the other stuff, EPs and splits will probably be hard to find, but I picked up LMI, Sham and Sideshow all on CD via fleabay for £1.99 each, so was well pleased with it. As a drummer, Hellhammer has always stood out to me as being a genius, I think his playing is best when he's not going full beans and gets to explore, such as is the case with Arcturus and Kovenant.

Will have to persist with the 3 I have picked up, but maybe also find the ICS Vortex album and the live in Oslo CD as well - anyone have any views on those?

Checking this out on youtube now, grabs me straight away, the black vocals are poor (I know everyone loves him) but musically its excellent straight away - shame about the bass drum being so low in the mix, the violin is lovely, so many layers in the music, some great sweep-picking as well - thanks!

The remastered version of the album sounds pretty different. Be sure to check out Ulver too, if you haven't already! Possibly the most diverse band I know. Ulver's vocalist was also Arcturus' vocalist for a long time.

I believe I haven't posted in this thread before, so hello everyone!

I'm curious if some of you have a list of your favorite, or at least notable, well-recorded/mastered metal albums for multiple genres? I'll post a few specific genres I listen to the most, and maybe we'll have some overlap.

I tend to get stuck in the routine of listening to the same bands/albums over and over again. My music library is quite extensive, but I only have a handful of albums where the mastering and production add an extra layer of dimensionality to the music - if that makes sense. Assuming that someone recommends an album I currently have in my iTunes library, it would definitely motivate me to listen to something new.

I can't figure out which genre I'm in the mood for, and I've been listening to Amorphis' Under the Red Cloud, Mgła's Exercises in Futility, Dalriada's Aldas and Ahab's The Boats of Glen Carrig incessantly since their release -- along with my focus/study albums.

I used to search through the archives 24/7 when I was in college looking for new music. A lot of the bands I listen to don't have that large of a following, or they are relatively unknown. I do want to give a shout out to a band that deserves some proper attention, because their music is so interesting and their songs are so well composed, it's crazy.

Check out Agrimonia from Sweden. Their first two albums are incredible, but their most recent album, Rites of Separation is a masterpiece. The songs average 11-15 minutes, but they don't feel like it. Lead vocalist is female if that adds to the interest lol.

This is my favorite song from the album:

lol. Here's muh list. Clickie!

When it comes to doom metal, I really like Esoteric.

For a folk metal song with a hilarious accordion solo, look up "Väkirauta" by Korpiklaani.

Melodic death metal: Check out In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi, Arch Enemy, Nightrage, Amon Amarth, Children Of Bodom, Kalmah, Dimension Zero, and At The Gates.

As for black metal...that's a whole 'nother universe. Way too much stuff to list. A good percentage of the bands in that list in the link above are black metal, and some of them have...interesting production. I don't care too much about production in metal. I more or less like it all. If I want superb production, I'll listen to classical or something.

I appreciate the response, Music Alchemist, but I really did want a small list of well mastered/produced albums lol.

I've been listening to metal for, oh I don't know, maybe 10+ years now. I had about 50,000 songs in my iTunes before I went through and pruned it. I know about all the big name melodeath bands you mentioned, but I haven't listened to their complete discographies. Well, except for Kalmah, Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquillity (DT is too hyped, and I found most all their albums a snoozefest.)

In terms of black metal, I actually enjoy albums with clean production, and I'm not into the whole lo-fi is trve mindset. Like, yes, I can appreciate Darkthrone's Transylvanian Hunger or Ulver's Nattens Madrigal, but the absolute **** production quality does take away from the music for me. The only album I really enjoy that has a lo-fi sound is Coldworld's Melancholie^2. Black metal can still feel dark and disgusting even when the production quality is good, like with Shining's V - Halmstad. Vinterland's Welcome My Last Chapter is another good example.

Eh. I wish some of my favorite albums had better production, because I think it would make the emotional connection better. I absolutely adore Insomnium, but holy **** most all their albums are so horribly mastered that it makes them annoying to listen to at times. If they remastered In the Halls of Awaiting or Above the Weeping World, I'd be the happiest person ever.

I would still suggest checking out many of those BM bands I listed. It's hard to guess how good you want the production to be, so you'll have to hear for yourself to know whether it's fancy enough and whatnot. If I could only recommend one band in this context, it would be Summoning. (Their first album is raw BM, but the rest are kinda fancy epic atmospheric BM, with a unique medieval/Tolkien-inspired style.) Aside from the usual suspects like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth, Anorexia Nervosa and Limbonic Art have decently-produced symphonic BM. Old Man's Child and Naglfar are great for melodic BM. And although they're very aggressive and raw, Antaeus, Aosoth, and Deathspell Omega are phenomenal extreme BM with good production, IMO. But compared to high-class orchestral recordings, any metal is going to have horrid production quality.

I'm listening to Dragonlord's Rapture album right now. I'd say this album has good production. They're symphonic black/thrash metal.

So I was going to play a trick on everyone and state that Iron Madien just released a giant four disk special edition of Book of Souls? Went on line and they actually did. Lol?

Decided to sit down with some coffee and listen to the whole album straight. I don't know why people bag on the record? The album is not boring nor is it too long? Songs are not too long either? Love it!

Here's some pretty good Russian tech death. These dudes are skilled and creative, and their album is only $3 on Bandcamp.
