The only album to feature guitarist Andy LaRocque, the first to feature drummer Gene Hoglan and the last to feature bassist Steve DiGiorgio.

Can't believe the talent in this single record.

the drumming on that album is unreal. you have to be a hell of a drummer to be able to play this stuff. bass drum patterns on that album are the most insane i have ever heard. as much as i love richard christy and sein reinert, gene stuff was crazier.

I love LaRocque and saw him live with King Diamond. Maybe one of my favorite guitarests who is also helping the young make great records now. Having him play in Death is kind of a dream. So happy to hear how his style blended with the band. I will listen for drumming next time.:christmas_tree:

andy was also Producer for the band sacramentum in sweden. he has done a lot of stuff. the stuff he has made with king diamond will endure forever. it is hard to find album of such high quality nowadays. i believe there is still plenty of good music being made, but the classics like abigail, conspiracy and them, these albums will be very hard to top.

Abigail was a favorite for soo long. Could not count how many times I have played it. Love the next one "Them" also Conspiracy was and is great. I was listening to the later "The Eye" on my reference system using the gold 1998 remaster CD. I could not believe how well it was recorded. The album was the perfect match for my system, and I think many don't realize how well King Diamond is recorded. I could never find the first release vinyl of Abgail, though I did find Them on Vinyl. In the 1980s I was buying cassette format to listen to metal.

The latest greatest hits is very hard to figure out. They took tracks from all over the place. Still it is listed as they maybe processed the entire track with out going to the master tape. They somehow processed the best stereo tracks they could find? Still it sounds pretty good but a little bright?

Jazzy death metal. A lot of it reminds me of Pryapisme but less chaotic.

Teachers who are off for the holidays sometimes have too much tie on their hands. Some random thoughts about recent music.....

Continuing to listen/stream to all kinds of stuff I've never heard from 2014. Listening to (last 24 hours). Looking for that diamond in the ruff:

Artificial Brain
Allegaen
Saur
Solstafir
Cretin
Young and in the Way
Old Man Gloom
Indian
Winterfylleth
Nux Vomica
Cannibal Corpse revisit
Electric Wizard revisit

I'm a sucker for interesting atmospheric "folkish" metal and weird or different extreme stuff. The stand outs for me in this group are Nux Vomica, Solstifar, Artificial Brain Artificial Brain more of my tech D liking than Allagaen that feel a little more generic-been there done that kind of thing-not a huge fan of the genre preferring dirtier grimier DM-I've got Decrepit Birth, Arsis and some other stuff-Allagaen doesn't bring anything new for me)and Solstafir-I get that this album is almost not metal-but really compelling. Saur and Winterfellyth were both enjoyable-I think Winterfellyth sound great-better than their last which I have-but need an editor....just some trimming.

But Solstafir and Nux Vomica  made a beautiful album to my ears. Nux Vomica were a suprsise. I had to look them up...
swirl together crust, melodic death metal, black metal, metallic hardcore, doom, noise, and ambient music into a cohesive, engaging whole.

That's pretty accurate. Quite a good mix of what I'd just call blackened crusty sludge and melody-some post rock-dig this.

I might be able to love Old Man Gloom-but that would take some work. I was a big Isis fan. Pretty off the charts for sure.  Indian is pretty similar to Death Mask on first listen. The vocalist could be almost interchangeable. But, I think Deathmask is more varied.  Such a great sludge and doom year. Electric Wizard didn't wow me as much as I'd hoped and I'm a fan. I think it's just alright.

Kayo Dot is next. I liked their last one-speaking of weirdness.

And, top 20 wise, I went back and listened to Scott Walker/Sun0)) Soused again and decided I must have it. Just kind of clicked. At first-it was just too bizarre-and I like bizarre. Avant Garde almost cabaret/comedia del arte or something operatic vocals and Sunn0)). It's like looking at a weird surreal painting and then you see these dark edges-or some fog seeping through the cracks that give it a kind of edge. Sunn0)) do a really interesting job IMO staying in the background and adding touches. Like reading a novel with a surprise at the end of a chapter. I think they've put together familiar elements into something that is really unique and engaging-what is really what I'm always looking for in way way or the other. But, it gave me a What reaction initially.

Gave Caninbal Corpse a more thorough listen-don't have any of their stuff.  I see what Redcar and Ferday were such big advocates. I don't think it's must have for me, but fun for sure.

I also re listened to Swans To Be Kind from my collection which confirmed why I love this band-not metal but the influence is there on so much of what I listen to and like.

Yes, I wonder if we will see another Decrepit Birth album this year. All three of their records are classics. There was a rumor of a new one in 2014 but of course it never came to light. They had a couple set backs this year, so maybe that is the delay?

ha-ha! What's the deal with that dude.

he really seems into his lifestyle choice...i enjoy reading his interviews LOL.   i do like how his lyrics are different than the normal brutal stuff, lots of metaphysical sci fi imagery.  overall i think they are an average DM band, so maybe having Bill as the vocalist/lyrics is what sets them apart...?
