Lets Talk Metal

It does sound good. Too bad the music recorded so well is utter crap.

I've been thinking this (or rather, the converse) lately. "Wow, this song is awesome and well-composed...but the recording sounds like crap!"

I really wish metal bands (and everyone else) would use better production on their albums. It's tricky to pull off most of the time.

When I get around to recording my own material, I want to use the highest-quality recording techniques and file formats. Anyone know of some good metal albums available in DSD or 24-bit?

I didn't realize Opeth's new album had already leaked. I hope it makes up for the disappointment of the past few releases.

  Welcome my friend!!!.

  Are you me?

Just your dedication to accurate links impresses me. I christen you as one of the gang.

This is an incredible post. Welcome to the forums :) (well, I don´t know if  I can say something like that as I´m also pretty new to the forums :D )

Thanks, everyone!

Would you all be interested in a future YouTube playlist featuring my favorite song for various metal sub-genres? (It would contain roughly 50 tracks.)

Anyone ever heard of Noctis and Benighted In Sodom? I was going to release the debut album of the former on an indie label that didn't work out, and I'm friends with the latter. (Both were originally one-man projects I've known personally since around 2006.)

I think most of the perks offered in the Indiegogo campaign should be available. LFF (Paradox Headphone creator) and a few others who have heard the demo unit had nothing but praise for the Geek Wave so at 142$ (Wave 32) it was a no brainer for me, throw in another 38$ for standalone DAC upgrade and my portable gear is pretty much set, I hope. I don't have enough money to chase the portable nirvana so stuff like AK240 ( which sounded not as good according to those same guys above) is out of my league :D

Oops sorry, I didn't put AK120 there =.=, they said AK240 is not as good as AK120 (pre-revision model), I will pm you the link since it's not possible to link it directly on head-fi.

Umm...this is news to me. Every review I've read up until now for the AK240 says it's leagues above any of the other Astell&Kern models and just about any other portable player in terms of sound quality. I respect purrin, though, so I will look further into this. He did mention not listening through the balanced output, I know that much.

Can you link me to any more sources (not PMs) saying that the Clip+ sounds better than the DX90?

Steve Wilson is a damn genius and makes the most beautiful stuff out there. The Raven That Refused To Sing is just incredible in every way. He also did Damnation and Deliverance and the DR scores on those are 11 and 10 respectively, and this all makes total sense with how Michael Akerfeldt writes and records songs.

The first two tracks of Damnation have such sad lyrics and soul!

I happened to find this thread and saw all the talk about dynamic range...  Anyone else buy as much of their metal on vinyl as possible since it's mastered to have more dynamic range?

I'm loving all the metal on vinyl these days.  And well... I enjoy spinning a record more than a cd
wink.gif

The Soilwork vinyl rips I heard just sounded soft and laid-back - and I didn't hear any more detail, so in this case, the CDs win.

That's from almost no experience, though. I own about 50 metal LPs/EPs, but don't even have a record player yet. I got them because they are ultra-rare and nearly impossible to find now.

I wish we would get another "real" Opeth album, trust me.
But I'm also enjoying this stuff quiet a bit.

You can get almost everything Steven Wilson made in 24-bit. Check out his homepage.

Not if you are expecting another metal release. This one is again (psychedelic) prog rock at its finest.
It is, like Mikael promised, a bit heavier compared to their last album but still not metal.

"At its finest" is a lofty claim. I liked Damnation, but Heritage didn't do much for me. It might grow on me if I listened to it more.

Poorly worded, sorry.
This album is (Psychedelic) Prog Rock through and through. Prime example etc etc. It's also pretty good if you like stuff like this.

If it was anyone else I would maybe love it. But.........it's........it's suppose to be Opeth for God's Sake!!!!!

Just super grateful for the older stuff.

Have to throw in my two cents on the Opeth topic, as they're been one of my favorites since I got into metal, and I'm wearing an Opeth shirt right now, how serendipitous.

I liked heritage, but I think a few of the tracks are just masturbatory ********. Nepenthe. That song. Is. So. Bad. Just a bunch of pointless noodling and really awkward singing. The intros to most of the songs can get pretty irritating as well. I really like the song Famine overall, but the beginning flute solo sounds like Pan is prancing around a death metal band. I don't get it. It's just... wankery... If the song just started with the piano part, it would be so much better. Once he hits that part, it's an incredible, beautiful song.

This is what scares me about Pale Communion. So much of what I've heard sounds like Mikael is just going to do a bunch of awkward singing and superfluous interludes again. He sounds like he's trying to win American Idol or the X Factor or some other terrible show with people over-singing every single note. It's depressing. I hope the album doesn't end up sounding like that the whole way through.

Steven Wilson already said they will be doing a 24/96 release with it, so I'm pretty stoked for that. I'm sure there will be great parts to the album, but we'll see where it goes...

I have multiple Opeth shirts.

Everything after Ghost Reveries (my personal favorite) seems like they're just going through the motions, sorry to say. I'll be sure to get the 24/96 download, though!

uh yeah...i literally hate Hertiage, it's awful.   my 5.1 blackwater park should be here today from amazon, i'll enjoy that one instead

i still respect Opeth, they've earned the right to make what they want.  they are kind of like the metallica of melo-death right

It took me a long time to warm up to Heritage. I don't hate it. I think it has it's moments and when I'm in the mood I enjoy it. I do find it lacks focus...kind of all over the place. Honestly I find Mikael more engaging when he alternates clean and extreme vox, but I guess those days are over.

I'd be down for a good psychedelic album, tho if he can pull if off.

I like the fact that you are into multichannel setups. Amazingly I started to do some research and there was far more DTS metal stuff than I thought. Do you have the Black Album in DVD Audio? Plus your completely set up to watch any concert DVDs. Do you have Opethshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamentations_%28Live_at_Shepherd%27s_Bush_Empire_2003%29 ? That is maybe the best live recording I have ever heard.

In some ways multichannel is like headphones in that you have 100% surround and not from the front.

I have The Black Album in DVD-Audio. Sounds better. I want to hear the DTS mix of the Black Album.

Megadeth 5.1 DTS anybody?
