I'm going nuts over ensiferum, finntroll, and moonsorrow right now... Awesome Bands!!!

yeah..I got the chance to listen to two ensiferum albums from their firsts, and i liked them alot.
also very melodic but maybe just too folky for me.  I will have to listen to them again because i really liked the melodies.
I have only one album of moonsorrow, its the 2 long tracks one,and it's really special.  I don't have any other albums in this style...  very atmospheric with black vocals.

finntroll I don't know.        they are all finnish,i can't believe that i only recentely discovered the finnish metal.    IT RULES!

Moonsorrow is truly astounding.  Kivenkantaja and especially Verisäkeet are required in any metal fan's collection.  In my opinion, those two albums are up there in Opeth territory.  You owe it to yourself to give them a good digesting.

I'm not too familiar with Moonsorrow, but I'll have to check them out.  Have you listened to Turisas?  Truly epic folk metal from Finland (of course).  I'd also recommend checking out Eluveitie - Slania, and Equilibrium - Sagas.

I will have to check out Turisas when I have the chance.  I agree with plonter, Slania is a good album (lead male vocals are a bit annoying at times, but I digress).  The title track is very catchy.

I love eluvetie's male vocalist..sounds very aggressive and screaming, not the typical death metal growling (thick and low).   I didn't care for their latest album though...  but the ones before slania is also good, but not as good as salania.     they also have two hot chicks in the band

I have a question by the way... do the male vocalist in death/black metal sometimes use some kind of effect on their voice?  I mean...not all the time, but sometimes, especially in new well pruduced recordings it sounds like they use some sort of effect in order to make it more extreme.    do you thing such a thing exist in the metal scene?

There's lots of use of multitracked vocals in metal. Some people don't like it, but frankly I'm ecstatic if a metal album isn't brick walled. I could care less about how many vocal tracks there are. Just give me some damn dynamics, please.

All of Moonsorrow's work up until after Verisakeet are must listens IMO.

This includes:

Suden Uni
Voimasta ja Kunniasta
Kivenkantaja
Verisakeet

To me they are the ultimate band in terms of this sub genre of music. Beyond epic with the best folk melodies while still not being silly sounding like Eluvietie and Turisas seem to me at times.

Silly?  That's one of the things I embrace most about the entire genre.  :)  With lyrical content about trolls, vikings, dragons, battlegrounds, faeries...  It's a great big hyper-aggressive macho Broadway musical about epic history and the supernatural, and that's just awesome as far as I'm concerned.  I'm trying to think of a metal song that isn't silly in some way, and I can't do it.  It's either overtly silly or it's silly because it's trying too hard to be serious.

I will certainly check out your Moonsorrow recommendations though - thanks!  :D

Let me rephrase. when I said silly I was more specifically talking about the sound of the melodies and not the lyrical content. I'm all for the fantasy stuff dont get me wrong. In any case, it was just an opinion of course and i still appreciate what bands like that do in the world of metal.
