Different headphones give differences of several dB's in the audible spectrum. Different amps, on the other hand, do not (maybe tenths or less) and have very little distortion, unless they're inadequate. Investing in a better amp can be a smart thing despite headphones having a larger impact, because of the price/performance curves getting steeper...
