Sorry only managed to get back on the search today. Well i think he might be interested in a tube one. That little dot mkIII sure seems nice.

Forgot to tell that he will probably use it to connect to his laptop.....

it would be within your budget to consider an LD MKIV

tube amps always impress as a gift, as well

Yes... that would be my 2nd choice in his price range, behind the DV332, which sounds very similar, but for a few hundred less. But... for $700 shipped it is the best for Senns.

That's out of my price range. I might go for the mkiii or mkiv.

Whatever you get, get tubes. Better for high impedance cans like the 650. Little Dot MK IV is nice, Woo Audio 3+ is very nice. If your budget is tight then a good place to start is this Head-Direct.com | YUIN

The RCA Clear Top tube that comes with that amp happens to be a perfect match for his 650's. You could also show him this https://www.tubeworld.com/index_high.htm

He would have tons of tube rolling options. The tube for this amp is the 12AU7, and there are lots of nice tubes on Ebay as well. I just bought a 7316 (military 12AU7) and it is magic. You could get him one on ebay or tell him to be on the look out for the 7316, its magic.

Here are some I have been stalking on Ebay, I want to accumulate some spares, he would be impressed if you gave him the amp and then said, "Hey Dad, I have this tube you should try"! It will sound better than the Clear Top.

Timeout. If he is using a laptop, are there rca jacks or a line out coming off the laptop or is there just the hp out? If it's the hp out, the new amp will only be a louder version of the hp out and not as good as what can be had. If his laptop is used with a docking station, he should have a line out. If not, it may not be worth spending for a decent amp.

huh? Either way that laptop will not have the power to drive his nice headphones, why would you confuse the OP like this. Of course its worth it. He has a limited budget and now you wanna sell him a dac or something like that? Did it ever occur to you that headphone out and line out on a laptop are the same thing?
