All,

I recently purchased a 3rd gen 30 gig ipod and love it. I've purchased a set of shure e2c's and while they're very nice, I really can't use them at work, too much isolation. I want to purchase another set of Headphones, and think I've narrowed it down to the Grado sr60 or sr80, although I am open to suggestions.

My question is, if I purchase the sr60's and later purchase a amp, will the 60's still be satisfactory? Or should I get the 80's in anticipation of eventually getting the amp.

I usually listen to rock. The cost difference between the two is not a factor.

TIA

Ive directly compared those 2 and the difference is extremely obvious for me even unamped. The SR-80 is much better and easily worth the extra $20-30

everything sounds better with an amp.....well, it depends on what amp you match your headphones with, it seems...

as for the Grado's, it might be better to get the SR80s....whether or not they need in amp to sound alright is still up in the air.....however, out of most sources, with the exception of most portables, the SR80 probably performs better than the SR60....and the SR80 will benefit more with an amp than will an SR60

as for sources, I hear the Ipod has a pretty decent headphone jack....could be wrong though

if you say the Shure E2C's isolate too much, then Grados will be another extreme in the sense that it's totally open and leaks sound which could bother co-workers...so it might be better to get a pair of headphones that don't leak too much if you're in that sort of environment.....

no other headphones sound quite like Grados, but the Sony D66 Eggo would be a good bet...along with the Beyerdynamic DT231...there's the Sennheiser HD497 as well if you're concerned with sound leakage and yet are concerned about not being able to hear stuff around you..

hope this helps!

Herozero youre last post states problems with these phones so i would be quick to suggest. The differences are very noticable for all decent portables, my sr-80s sound just great out of my ipod

Hey
Ive got both the SR80s and the 497s. After listening to both for extended periods of time I find that the 497s are more neutral, natural, and analytical sounding than the SR80s. That being said, the Grados are a little more detailed and emotional. It really depends on which type of sound you are looking for. Personally I don't think that the Grados are just for rock. I like just the same with classical music. The 497s are great all arounders also. If you are set on the Grados already, I wish you luck. I am sure you will enjoy them, especially with the Ipod (as I do).
